Age - 27
Reason for choosing Harvard
Way back in 2001, Our family faced a huge financial crisis due to a bug in the stock market software application. The bug would have been marked as a low priority by any IT company but that bug left our lives in darkness for more than 15 years. We are still repaying the debts. In 2007, I was in my third year of graduation and one day my dad explained the reason behind our financial crisis.
I started crying; I wasn't so strong. A small issue in system drained away all our savings and we are pushed into negative. On that day I determined to learn programming more deeply and work in software industry to develop better applications. Though I m from Electrical Engineering, I worked learning programming and got into Infosys.
After one and half year got into Oracle as I started understanding the several divisions in software world and I wanted to be a pro in User Experience. I started analyzing consumer behavior, how my customers would use this. Is there any silly issues in my design. A lot of brain storming before I complete the code. My Manager hates me for this, I take a long time time to complete my assignment.
While working at Oracle and Infosys, I observed a lot of people switched jobs for the only reason better pay. Initially, I assumed that they are greedy but later understood why they are switching jobs. To clear off family debts and the debts are due to high mortality rates in their parent's business. Though their parents started pooling money and establish a business. They were not able to succeed and are left in debts. Skilled workers are migrating, thus many skills are in extinction. SMEs are facing a severe workforce shortage as they are Unable to find the right market.
I understood the problem is much bigger than the product design issue what I thought. Some or the other kind of problem is hitting this SME segment. Failure is not wrong but these SMEs and skilled people do not have avenues or ways to come out of their problems. For them, Life is filled completely with darkness.
There is something more I need to do and the more it is delayed, the next generation workforce will get ready who would be working only for money sake, losing a chance to work in the field of there interest.
When I started working on one of my idea to help SMEs and Skilled workers grow their markets . I understood my weaknesses and started working on them.
1. Participation in Startup weekend Hyderabad showed me how a product should be developed in 48 hours. I analyzed where I have gone wrong and corrected myself.
2. To understand more about the problems off SME and rural areas skilled workers issues. I applied for Jagriti Yatra this year and got selected. One in 5 applicants generally get selected for this. (I was awarded a second level scholarship for my work in a NGO BloodConnect)
3. I work at an NGO called BloodConnect. It is based in India and it has 300 volunteers across India. I head the Hyderabad division and also I work in the marketing section too. My work at BloodConnect exposed me to several activities making me shed my fears as an introvert and helped to shape my up as a leader.
To streamline the process and ensure easy access to donors and blood banks stock data, We prepared an impact proposal document and submitted to Tata Social Enterprise challenge. The results would be announced on Nov 15th and if we win, we can get some decent amount to develop the necessary applications to reach our goal.
Met many blood banks CEOs in Hyderabad to create a one web portal which depicts the information of blood stocks in all blood banks and is open to all public.
As of now we handle Blood Helpline Requests manually mapping the donors nearby a hospital to the requester by calling the donors from our database . As part of Fund raising, we are planning to raise funds to create mobile apps and automate the complete process
Future Plans
Post MBA, I am planning to work in emerging markets as a general management or marketing consultant for SMEs to find avenues for market reach and organic growth.
In long term, I would like to get back to my idea and work on it to provide market for skilled workers and SMEs.
