HI ,

Could you help evaluate my profile ? Do I have a realistic shot at the ultra elite schools ? I figure I should focus on the schools that I really have a shot during the first round.

Male 26 years old (27years by July 2011)

Work Experience : 4.5 years in China

Top mobile phone company -last 1.5 years

Responsible for supply chain of different products. Day to day work involves managing small project teams of 3-4 people. At different occasion I have to lead virtual teams of different functions based all over the world.

Top electronics manufacturer - first 3 years
Started as an engineer and quickly developed to the leader of a team of 4 SW engineers developing a key project within a year.
Supervised and developed a team of 6 engineers to work on a set of 10 different projects. While I was not responsible for P&L for that team , I was responsible for technical performance of the team.

GPA : 2.67
Top 10 Engineering School in Asia. There were no extenuating circumstances , I just coasted through my undergraduate course - the folly of my ill spent youth. Graduating without honors was a kind of a 'wake up' moment for me.

GMAT : 770 - 50Q , 45 V - 99 Percentile

International Experience:
I am from India, grew up in the Middle East, studied in Singapore and have worked in China and Singapore.

I can speak English , Tamil fluently with an intermediate level of Hindi and a basic level of Mandarin.

Extracurriculars:

During undergrad :
Business Manager of the Computer Society - Managed to get double the sponsorship amount as the previous year.

Since graduation :
My hobbies are to go hiking and travel and I try to do that every weekend. To that extent , I have traveled to around 20 major cities in China, 40+ hiking/tourist areas besides other parts of SE Asia.

Post MBA aspirations

Entrepreneur - possibly a company based in India.

Questions :
To what extent have I made up for my poor GPA with my GMAT score ? What kind of doubts would Adcom still have about my poor GPA ?

I really don't examples of leadership experience outside work. My volunteering experience is sparse. With enough leadership experience at work, is the lack of leadership experience outside work an issue ?

Are my dreams schools of Harvard or Wharton possible with a poor GPA ? What are my chances with LBS and INSEAD ?

At Harvard, Wharton, and their close relatives, it is very hard to overcome a 2.67, even with a 770 GMAT, without additional coursework in which you earned high A's. The GMAT does mitigate; it shows you're bright and capable. The GPA shows (or doesn't show) that you know how to apply yourself. (Please see MBA Admissions: Low GPA or GMAT) If you were to take courses and earn A's in them, it might help you, but of course there are no guarantees. Without recent A's the adcom may doubt that you can execute academically, that you know how to excel in an academic setting.

Schools prefer to see commitment or involvement outside of work. Your lack of community service doesn't take away from your leadership at work at all. However, it means can't demonstrate commitment to community or leadership in that venue. You can show extra-curricular activities in the form of your travel and hiking. And if you motivated others to joint you, you also show leadership and possibly organizational skills.

Assuming you do not take additional courses, I think your chances at LBSare better than at the other 3 schools. However, given your GMAT, they are not -0- at any of them. I suggest you apply to a few of the ultra-elite and then also apply to some programs that support your entrepreneurial goals and may be more willing to overlook your GPA in light of your GMAT and strong Asian experience.

My engineering course is known to be difficult and I majored in Electronics which was the toughest major in the course. I won't be taking additional courses before applying , so I hope I can explain the low GPA in my applications.
