You're very welcome! So there are two questions here and I'll address them separately:

1) "Standing out" - there's no such thing. One group isn't easier than another and trying to fit that model is going to hurt more than help. Don't worry about that. If product management is what you want to do - and you're passionate about it - research the hell out of it and sell the adcom on why you're better than all those other engineers trying to do it too. If it's consulting, then sell that. But no, an application with "consulting" doesn't trump "product management" or vice versa.

2) It won't come across scripted because you probably won't be flat out stating it. And if you do, it'll sound contrived. So be careful. But yes, not working for a large company means you get to do more stuff. Wear more hats. Not to mention, no bschool wants a ton of Google folks running amok. Or Bain. Or GE. It's about balance. So play your part!
