Hi all
I have this question for some time: How important social work or extracurricular activities are in getting admittance to top business school?
I have a degree in management (specialization in finance) from a private university in Indonesia--which is definitely not selling to top business schools in the US and the UK. My GPA is mediocre if not bad, 3.15 of 4.00. I have never participated in any extracurricular / social activities because I have always worked for as long as I can remember. As an undergraduate I worked to pay for my tuition, and as an employee (a banker for more than 12 yrs) I have long work hours that I even struggle to stay alert when I study for GMAT. My first GMAT score is 590 and now I am working on my second trial. But I have this bugging question that I can't get off of my mind: Am I wasting my time hoping to be admitted to top MBA programs given all those uninteresting facts that I can no longer change (degree, GPA, no history of social work)? Should I aim for a regular Masters degree instead?
Additional information: Currently I'm a VP at a global bank, working with international teams and surrounded by colleagues who are all top business schools alumni. I'm turning 35 soon and this year is my last chance to apply for scholarships. I'm thinking about pursuing an MBA in the UK (looking at Oxford Said, Cambridge Judge, Imperial College, Manchester, Lancaster, Birmingham, Durham, Nottingham, and Edinburgh), but if my chances are too slim, maybe I should change my plan. Feedback on my situation will be highly appreciated.
