Bachelor Of Engineering, Manufacturing Processes & Automation SCORE: 74.0 %
Senior School Certificate (CBSE, India) -- 90.8 % (2006)
Secondary School Certificate (CBSE, India) -- 95.0% (2004)
Work Experience
Working as Drilling Fluids Engineer in one of the top 2 Energy Services company in the world. (July 2010 - Present)
I provide technical consultation and the following On-site services to clients:
• Drilling fluids formulation and maintenance. • Contingency management
• Fluid testing and well site data analysis • Documentation and costing
• Inventory & associated logistics management • Ensuring adherence to HS&E standards
Its a high responsibility job because when I am working on site, I solely represent my company to the client on the field. People management or leading people is a part of my job. Due to surprising nature of oil drilling, I often have to improvise and think out of the box.
I have work experience in India, Houston(USA) , Papua New Guinea, Indonesia.
The nature of my work provides a fair share of international experience for work as well as training. I also get frequent opportunities to work with expats when working in India.
Extra-curricular
• Freelanced on a industrial consulting project for a small scale production firm in India. Because of the great results of the project ,the company granted me another project next summer for one of their sister concerns.
• Worked as summer intern in a business modelling firm in India.
• Served as the Convener for the annual cultural festival of my college. Led a team of about 120 people.
• Served as PR coordinator of an NGO of the New Delhi region for an year.
• Worked as creative head in the filming of the first ever promotional video for my college.
• Served as Head of Student Council in school - led various teams in cultural, academic, technical and sports event managment.
INTERESTS: • Fitness Training Enthusiast • Amateur Nutritionist • Avid Basketballer • Science Fiction Reader
At present, I am not able to devote time for social work due to my hectic schedule. I use most of my free time (which is very less usually) to prepare for GMAT.
Post MBA Goals
Management level jobs preferably in the energy sector. I am keenly interested in energy sector consulting and hence open for jobs in general management consulting firms but in relevant roles.
Please provide a general evaluation.
I have the following specific queries:
1. Please let me know about the strengths and weaknesses of my profile. And any advice on how to improve/correct them to suit my goals. Also, if you don't mind letting me know which part of my applications may be too unproductive to mention.
2. Since, I have been working only for 15 months now, how much work experience should I gain in order to achieve desired goals?
3. What kind of MBA programs should I approach to suit my goals? How would you compare a general MBA to MBA in Oil & Gas Management for my profile? Also, suggest some schools (if possible) which would best serve my interests.
4. All of my extracurricular activities, except for my personal interests as listed, are a thing of the past now. This is due to the hectic nature of my work. Is a that a negative point?

Here are the responses to your queries:
The biggest weakness that we see is low work experience. It is not just the number, but your experience is more inclined towards technical and analytical nature and you are yet to show much leadership skills. You might have to show your experience in a different manner focusing on the impact you have had on the organization, your team or other environment around you.
There is no magic number that is sufficient. Focus on the quality of experience and contributing towards the growth of organization and your team and developing your skills in order to succeed and gain the necessary skills to be competitive.
To suggest schools, we'd like to know if you have any location, budget or cultural preference.
Your extra currics are solid. It's true that all of them date back to college but that's not too far back into the past. It tells something about who you are. It is ok if you do not get time to pursue any of those activities now due to lack of time, but you should go ahead and show your passion. Show that you do like something apart from work too.

Your goals can be a little more refined in terms of the role that you are seeking post MBA. You will get a 'management level job' anyway, but that does not define the role that you want to have. Make a coherent story and relate it to the skills and experience that you have gained over the years and how that role will evolve to meet your long term goal.

I have some financial constraints and personal responsibilities due to which pursuing an MBA is a little tough for me at this point in time. I wish to save some money for higher studies till I gain about 5 years work experience. (I have already started planning just to enhance my chances) What type of program should I focus on then? A 2 year program or an Executive MBA?
Being a part of a global Energy services giant for just about 15 months, I have not yet had much impact on the organization or my surroundings. As far as I see my future in this company for the next 4 years, I am pretty sure that the nature of work is going to be mostly technical, though with increase in responsibilities as I gain experience.
Is it necessary to work in a middle level management position to improve my chances for admission into a good B-school?
I have keen interest in Energy sector (preferably Oil/Gas) consulting as I will be able to use my technical knowledge. Though, I am sure that I will be able to narrow down my interests and goals as I gain more experience and knowledge in this field.
I feel, in about 5 years time, I would be able to save about 15 lac INR for MBA through systematic investments which I have already started implementing.
I am interested in ISB and IIM A(PGPX) as an MBA in India would definitely cost less than an MBA abroad. But on the other hand, I really want to have global exposure preferably in Europe as I feel US schools are out of my financial reach. (please correct me if I am wrong)
Please suggest some schools and also the feasibility of an MBA considering my financial constraints.

Good to know that you are planning well ahead of time. The type of program will depend on the time when you are doing an MBA and on your career goals. Career switchers usually prefer a two year MBA as they get an opportunity for an internship favoring the career shift. For career enhancement with good amount of work-ex, maybe you can prefer a 1 year MBA so you can get done quickly.
By being in a technical role also, you can display leadership skills. To show leadership skills, you need not necessarily be in a leadership position. It is the leadership 'potential' that you have to show and that can be shown by skills such as decision making, innovation, professional maturity, team skills, etc.
Do not think of financial constraints right now... It's too early. You will anyway get a financial aid wherever you apply. Right now, just focus on your career and build your profile well.
