Hi Paul,
Its great that you are sharing your experience and dispensing much needed guidance. Would appreciate it if you could give me an evaluation of my chances in securing a place at Judge, Said, IMD, Insead or LBS. Any other advice on strengthening my profile? I am acutely aware of the weakness in my academic profile. Hoping to stay within the industry and use the MBA as a career progression.
1. Male, 28, Asian descent from the South East Asia Region
2. Trained as a pharmacist
4. GMAT score is 660 AWA 5.0. GPA 2.8. (Note: Not stellar academic results in my earlier years but improved steadily until it culminated in a Dean's List in my final year. Was also on exchange at UPenn and took classes at the Eng School and Wharton Business School during my undergraduate years)
5. Full time work experience >4.5 years
Currently working as a lean/six sigma expert for one of the leading pharmaceutical companies manufacturing business unit.
6. International experience
- United States (~1 year)
Have experience working in a pharmaceutical start up in the US (took a year off from pharmacy school)
- Singapore (~3.5 years) Leading Pharmaceutical Company
- Australia (~1 year) Leading Pharmaceutical Company

Hi B,
You are right that your academic profile causes you the most problems. Either a low GPA or a low GMAT can be overcome, but it is hard to do both. Do you have plans to take the GMAT again? With a low GMAT and a high GPA, you can showcase intellect throughout your work and your application and basically play the "stupid test" card and hope the school isn't too obsessed with its average. With a low GPA and a high GMAT you just play the "the lightbulb came on after college" card and hit maturity, discipline, and focus throughout your essays. When it's both ... that's tough.
The big key to try to overcome these factors will be to bank on your interesting work experience and industry background and showing the transferable skills that will make you a great member of the class and a home run hire post-MBA. Take those transferable skills, use them to show that you have the ingredients to go to the next level as a leader, and then explain how the MBA builds the bridge.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for your feedback and will be working hard on my positioning. I am unlikely to re sit for the GMAT but intending to work with what i have. Just a follow up query, if my company decides to sponsor my MBA (either full or partial), will it be looked on favorably or otherwise by the admission committee?
