Hi,
I am moving from Hawaii to Germany with my wife, who is originally from Germany, so that she can be closer to family and friends. I was planning on attending a top full-time business school in Germany in the fall to get a MBA degree because my last job was as a operations manager and I realized that I really enjoy management. However, I took the GMAT test on April 1st though and scored higher than I thought I would (750, Q49, V44).
Now, many of my friends are telling me that I should try to apply to the best schools in the US because with a 750 on the gmat I would at least have a chance to get into a school like Harvard, Stanford, MIT, etc.
Can you please let me know what my chances are of getting into one of those schools (or another top school)? I'm trying to decide if I should stick to my original plan and attend school in Germany this fall or hold off and try to get into one of the best US schools next year, with the German school as a backup.
Profile: Male, 29, caucasian/asian from Hawaii. Went to college in Nebraska. Worked in NYC.
Undergrad: University of Nebraska '04, GPA=3.8 out of 4.0
Experience: 4 years exhibits department work for publishing company in NYC. Managed two employees.
Experience: 2.5 years operations manager for small company in Honolulu. Managed 12 employees.
Interests: Managing company sports teams (i.e. coed softball), Surfing
Community Involvement: unfortunately none that I can think of

A high GMAT alone doesn't really make one competitive at a top school.
Think of GMAT like height to basketball. Being below a certain height can certainly keep you out, but beyond a certain threshold it comes down to everything else but height (athleticism, basketball smarts, ball handling, etc).
In your case, it's hard to say because there's not really a lot of people with similar professional backgrounds as yours to really benchmark against, so it'll be quite random. I wouldn't bank on getting into a top school (because *no one* can -- there are no safety schools within the top 16). If you apply to HBS, Stanford, Sloan, Kellogg, Wharton, etc. there's a chance you'll get in, but there's also a pretty good chance you won't.
A lot of it comes down to your personal situation as well, which is something only you can decide for yourself. If your wife is moving back to Germany, you may want to think long and hard about whether it's worth it for you personally to apply to b-school halfway across the world. To what degree you're willing to sacrifice your personal/family life for your career and individual ambitions will really vary from one person to the next.

Thank you for your response. The basketball analogy is very helpful.
I definitely wouldn't bank on getting into one of those schools, but I guess I was just wondering how my profile compares to the average applicant for the top schools. I know that it's going to be really tough no matter what, since these schools let in less than 10% of applicants, but if my profile looked a little better than the typical applicant I would seriously consider giving it a try in order to take advantage of the great opportunity. If my profile is average or less than average for these schools though, I can accept that I might not be the right fit for them and continue on pursuing a program outside of the top 15.
My wife wants to move back to Germany for at least a year but she would be happy to live in the Boston area or California after that while I attend school because we used to live on the mainland and both enjoyed it.
So personal situation aside, can you let me know how I stack up to other candidates for top schools?
