Paul,
I am new to this website and wanted to submit my profile for your thoughts. I am currently 24 (white male) with two years of work experience and plan to apply this fall for the fall of 2008.
GMAT / GPA
I graduated with a 3.1 in government from a Top 15 liberal arts college. I took the GMAT once and scored a 740 with a 6 in the AWA.
Work Experience
I have worked in the restaurant industry since college. During my first year out, I managed the finances of a high end sole proprietorship restaurant in Washington DC. I was promoted to general manager, the top boss in a restaurant, last year, and oversee an annual revenue stream of 2.5 million and 50 employees. Financially, the restaurant is in much better shape and more successful than when I started. I plan to incorporate this business turn-around into my essays.
Extracurriculars
I played a sport, three year starter, during the fall and spring of college. I was elected and served as team president. I also played intramural sports in the offseason, but didn't do anything else major. Since college I have a bunch of hobbies but my job has limited my extracurriculars. I'm hoping that this will suffice since I was active during college.
Why now / Why MBA
I really like my current job, but I simply do not want to work in restaurants for my career. I also cannot be promoted beyond my current position. I really enjoy the financial component of my job, specifically working for a company that suffered financial trouble. Outside of work I follow the financial world closely. I would like get an MBA to transition to finance and hopefully work in leveraged finance for an investment bank. I realize this is a fairly big career shift, which is again why I need an MBA. Down the road, I want to run my own business. Therefore, I want a program that is strong in both finance and general management. I am planning to apply to the following five schools.
Tuck-Reach
Michigan-Possible
Duke-Possible
UVA-Possible
Georgetown-Safety
Do you think I am over-reaching? I feel I have a unique profile and decent leadership, especially as a younger applicant. Are there any other schools I should consider? I really appreciate your help.
