Male, 25, 3.5 years work experience in the insurance industry
GMAT- 690 (46Q, 38V)...my first attempt was a 610...I believe a 690 is around my ceiling, I was averaging around 640 in my practice tests
Graduated from the University of Illinois in 2004 with a BS in Finance, GPA was 3.5 and I graduated with honors.
I am currently working in the insurance industry as a small commercial underwriter. I have obtained my CPCU designation, professional underwriter designation, I completed the program in only 2 years (the industry standard is 3). Although I only have 3.5 years of experience, but I was leading underwriter in 2007.
The reason I am getting a MBA is because I am in a very old(in terms of average age) industry, the average person in my office is probably around 40 in my position and mangement is even older. I have been told by numerous co-workers and senior management that shortly management positions will be opening because of retirement. So I want to position myself the best I can. Plus I believe that being in school and working at the same time will provide new skills to be successful in both.
I did volunteer on a campaign for a Alderman this year for about 2 months, but with studying for my CPCU and GMAT I really haven't had any free time to get involved in anything else. Will that hurt me?
I plan on focusing my essays about love to learn (another reason for going back to school), my unique work experience (its not everyday you find a 25 year underwriter), I love the atmosphere at both Chicago and Northwestern and I believe I can strive in both those schools. Is there anything else I should focus on?
Any weakness you see in my profile that I should address?

Congrats on a nice boost in your GMAT. Moving up 80 points between exams is rare and you should take a lot of pride in that accomplishment.
A friend of mine who is in underwriting was just commenting the other day about how it's all about the old guard in his company -- he was scared that they'd never retire.
Sounds like your're quite good at your job, which is great. Your challenge will to be able to not fall into just writing about the technical details (and boring your audience), but rather raising up a level and discussing the broader impact of your role on making your company successful and in serving the customer. If you can do that and show yourself as a leader in so doing, that should help a lot.
Sounds like you're driving to join a part-time program.
On the face of it, I don't see any major weaknesses. Are you confident that you can achieve some solid recommendations?
Yeah, your com. service isn't the best, but the Alderman experience might play nicely. It shouldn't be too much of a ding against you.

I am planning on applying to a part-time program, will my 3.5 years of work experience hurt me in my application process? I know they average is around 5 for full time. I really haven't had a position were I manage people, but I have worked on projects that I led small groups.
I have already secured letters of rec. from my boss and my regional vice president (he has acted like my mentor). I coached them a bit this week, I gave them my current resume, a list of tasks/projects I have completed for my job, a list of accomplishments from work, a sample letter I liked and a quick "how to" guide on how to write a effective letter of rec.; Should I ask them to focus on anything? I told them it would help me if they could mention my leadership skills.
I have a question on when to apply. I am currently working on my essays for Kellogg and Chicago, hopefully I can have all my apps completed by the end of this month, maybe mid-feb. With Chicago and Kellogg having rolling admissions would it hurt my applying to the Summer session around then? Or should I apply to the fall session? I am assuming that not that many people have applied to the fall session yet. I could just be thinking too much about this but I figure I would ask the question.
