Hi Paul,
I'm planning on applying for Fall 2009 and would like attend a school in either California or New York:
I'm 24 years old - 25 in October, I have a late birthday. Female, Chinese American, born and raised in California.
Undegraduate: BA in Political Economy of Industrial Socities, UC Berkeley; GPA 3.1-2; emphasis on International Business - took Asia Business Travel study (4 week course on conducting business internationally, 2 week travel to Asia). Held various part time jobs/volunteer work throughout college and interned as a Planner at Barneys New York in New York for a summer.
Work experience: I began working right after graduation as a Merchandise Planning Assistant at DFS Group LP (LVMH Subsidiary, Travel retail), within 6 months I was promoted to Assistant Planner. 14 months later I was promoted to Associate Planner, with full ownership and accountability of over $30+ million business. 9 months later I was promoted to manage $70+ million business. I am by far the youngest at my level and notably the fastest to move up the chain. It will be 3 years in June. From my experiences, I specialize in international retail - unfortunately given company budgets and restraints I have never had the opportunity to travel for business.
GMAT: 690 (Q46, V38), AWA official score not yet received
Personal: Although I have never traveled for my company, I have traveled quite extensively over Europe, N Africa, and Asia. I studied Spanish in High School and French in college - both very rusty but I can remember basic speech (mainly in French) and can read fairly well. I speak Mandarin conversationally. I have been involved for the past 6 months with an organization I truly believe in - we help provide mentor ship and guidance to the at risk youth of our city. And, I don't know if this makes a difference, but I will not need financial aid.
My MBA Goals:I'm hoping that UCLA, USC, NYU are not far fetched schools. Anything above schools of that caliber I am assuming I am unqualified for (please do let me know what other schools would be possible for me). I would like to pursue a career in international business or consulting.
Would it make a difference if I were to spend about 4-6 months studying Mandarin in China? If it were to help improve my chances in getting into a good school, I had the following plan in mind: continue working until end of 2008, enroll in an accredited university (if possible) in Shanghai or Beijing to study Mandarin, then attend MBA school Fall of 2009. Applications would be due prior to me going abroad, so would it make an impact on acceptance if I made known my intention to study abroad? Or should I continue working?
Thank you for your help!!
