29 yr old Indian New Zealander
low GPA (overall C/C+) - Did not Sits & at least 8 Fail grades.
Was doing four year degree on Advanced Maths - finished with Stats degree from reputable university and a further graduate qualification involving postgrad papers focused on Organisation Mgmt (did better in this area)
First attempt GMAT 680 (Q42, V41)
High GMAT 760 (Q49, V44) - one month later.
Strong career - - worked in recruitment in New Zealand for a year. 3 years in Japan finishing as a Manager of a high revenue generating team of reputed recruitment MNC. Moved to KL, Malaysia to help another MNC start up - Director of the Division. 6 mths. And then 6 mths managing a boutique in Sydney, Australia.
Extras: Started a consulting club in University - which has become a highly reputed force at the uni. Won reality TV show (fear factor). On production site, due to site mgmt error, caught on fire - 12% 3rd degree burns - in hospital for a month. Ambassador for burns unit. Rep sports player. My application pitch is to move into Human Capital Management which is in line with recruitment. Also the capacity to help assist students with their career applications.
Explanation for low GPA is the accident and subsequent after effects.
I have applied to MBS & AGSM (visited both schools, met staff). I also need a scholarship to do my MBA.
First your thoughts on being accepted into the two course?
Your thoughts on potential for scholarship?
Your thoughts on top 10 schools (Wharton) and others such as HAAS, NYU?
How closely do Admissions staff look at explanation for weakness applications (GPA) - do they check dates - match up the reasons - or with a strong application - is a certain legitimate explanation enough?
Any suggestions - tips?

Quite varied and impressive!! International Exp is strong! Although it has the potential to be a double-edged sword, I am sure you had the 'right' reasons to make all the switches you made.

Evrything sounds impressive! Although I am a little unsure about how you will use the hospital incident to suit your profile. Could be used in one of the experience-based essays I guess.

I dont think you will face any problem in getting the interview calls in the above 2 colleges. In the interview it will depend on your presentation, communication and confidence!!

You surely are a candidate to be considered for scholarship and most colleges would not mind offering you scholarship/assistantship in order to retain you in their list of final selections.

Your profile has all the ingredients needed to apply to the best schools. Its the essays tht will prove to be the make or break factor in your case....and obviously the interview too.
Btw, for the kind of specialization you are looking at, I dont think NYU is the right school, considering its focus on finance. I mean NYU's location is attractive for any job-seeker, but the course just might not be the best one for what you are looking to do.

The adcoms assimilate all the information about the candidate that has been made available via the application process and weigh the applicant's strengths against the weaknesses to form an informed opinion about the applicant. They compare the candidacy of this applicant with that of the other applicants in the pool for that round/year. If they find a missing link in your reasoning, and if they find you worthy of being given a chance to explain the discrepancies then you will be called for an interview wherein you will need to explain the discrepancies etc.
Any suggestions - tips?
Your profile is very good ! Just focus on your essays and start gearing up for the interviews as I am sure you will get to the interview stage!
