Stats:
Age: 27 (will be 28 when I apply), white male
GMAT: 670
GPA: 3.2 (didn't have great time management while in school, but grades reflect an improving trend from freshmen to senior year)
Education: BA in American History (Duke University)
Work Experience:
Worked in D.C. on a U.S. congressman's legislative staff for 6 months.
Worked as a tour guide in Costa Rica for 5 months (I speak decent spanish, although it's a little rusty at this point)
Have worked as a bank examiner at the Fedral Reserve for the past 4 years
-recently, as a bank examiner, I've had the opportunity to lead teams of examiners into troubled depository institutions
-primarily responsible for assessing the financial condition of banks and communicating my analysis to both senior management at the financial institution and Federal Reserve. In the current banking environment, I've gained extensive experience conducting contentious discussions with bank management.
-recently earned the CFA charter - passed all three levels on the first attempt. In view of my weak undergraduate GPA and previous lack of exposure to quantitative coursework in college, this achievement shows a strong interest and aptitude for financial statement analysis, statistical analysis, and capital markets
-I was also recently promoted to "commissioned" examiner. Every federal banking regulatory agency requires examiners to become commissioned, as it signifies that your managers have determined that you are capable of leading an examination and operating independently in the field. This process generally takes four years.
-extensive experience training and mentoring other examiners
Extracurriculars:
-Serve on the board of directors of a land leasing company (located in southern Louisiana) that leases land to companies that service oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. I've been on the board for about a year and it's been a great opportunity to participate in strategic planning, budgeting, and provided me with exposure to the oil and gas industry.
-Youngest member of the investment committee for an employee sponsored charitable giving program
-Member of the CFA Institute
Career Goals:
-Become a an equity analyst (buy-side or sell-side) covering the financial services sector. From there, I would ultimately like to transition into a portfolio management role for an endowment or pension fund.
I would like to attend an elite school with a decent general management program and a strong finance program (e.g. Wharton, NYU, MIT, Columbia, CBS).
I realize that the GPA and GMAT are slightly south of the median grades and scores for these schools, but for the career path that I'm charting technical skills and relevant experience are far more important than what you did in college and whether or not you aced the geometry and algebra on the GMAT. I know a quite a number of MBAs with strong GPAs and GMAT scores who couldn't tell you the first thing about analyzing a cash flow statement.
Really curious to hear your thoughts. Thanks.
