I was wondering if you could help me out with a profile evaluation.
- I am a 25 year old white male (26 when starting school)
- Went to a small southern public school
- BA in History (3.1/4) but had a "concentration" (school does not have minors) in Business (3.5/4 in those classes)
- Currently work at a Big 4 Accounting firm in the consulting practice (economic/tax consulting). I think this will help bridge the gap between a humanities major and math abilities.
- Have been promoted to the highest possible level before they make you go to B-school (Senior Associate)
GMAT 750 (Q49/V42)
I am also involved in multiple charities ranging from soup kitchens to scholarship funds (not a board member on any, but active volunteer at all)
I was a college athlete (I hold an NCAA record - if this matters)
I want to go to business school because I want to end up in private equity or in corporate strategy at a large corporation, and I think the best way for me to do that is through bulge bracket management consulting (M/B/B) and then trying to move over to PE/Industry.
My questions are:
1) Do I have a shot at schools like H/S/W? Is it even worth it to apply?
2) I also am very interested in Columbia, Tuck, Haas, Stern, Kellogg, and Darden. How are my chances at these schools? Also, if H/S/W seems out of reach, I will apply ED to Columbia. What are your thoughts on my chances at Columbia ED?

Wow, that's some list! (i.e., it's very long... you should try to get it down to no more than six schools by the time you apply)
I like the looks of your profile overall, but I bet your undergrad GPA alone will make H/S/W a long shot. They just have so many great applicants that they don't need to make very many exceptions or overlook many weaknesses. That doesn't mean "You will DEFINITELY not get in," but I think you should expect to aim a tad lower. By all means, take a shot at those schools if you want, but then you may want to think about actually applying to more like 7-8 schools overall, to spread your bets enough. (In that case, I'd apply to no more than 3-4 in Round 1 and then the rest in Round 2.)
I think that Tuck and Darden should be doable for you... You can even range a tad higher, but definitely do yourself a service and don't obsess on the rankings too much. H/S/W seems a bit hard for you but Darden seems doable (NOT a safety, though), to give you a feel for how I'm seeing your candidacy.
Love the focus on Columbia. If it's truly your first choice, then by all means go ED. So many applicants waffle on stuff like this... If it's really where you want to be, there's no better way to signal that.

Thanks for your input, it seems to make perfect sense. I will definitely be cutting down my list. Two additional questions:
1) Of H/S/W, which one do you think that my profile might be "most compatible" with (i.e. is one of them more lenient on grades than the others? Will one overlook the grades more because of the GMAT)? Just was curious, otherwise, if it seems that they are all the same I will apply to Columbia ED.
2) Speaking of Columbia ED - with your assessment above, it seemed like you think I have a fairly good shot. Just wanted to confirm.
