Linda,

I majored in History. My thesis was "History through the eyes of leadership: Popes and U.S. Presidents."

Can someone let me know if I have a chance at sniffing the Top 10? My top two choices are Dartmouth or Columbia. Harvard and Stanford are dream reaches.

Applying for matriculation in Fall 2011 (would be age 27 at the time)

Male, Asian-American
GMAT: 710 (but did not get over the 80% percentage hurdle for Quant)
GPA: 3.4 from a private Tier 1 top-20 university (although I started at a public top-40 university, transferring into the institution I graduated from).

Work Experience:

1 Year at a mid-size local asset management firm (left due to family reasons)
1 Year at a boutique wealth management firm
2 Years and counting at a big, global institutional asset management firm

Community Leadership:

-Served as a Resident Assistant in a 300-person residence hall
-Currently mentor male undergraduates in life/student skills at Stanford University
-Selected for a 15-student special seminar with the Business School Dean at my university to design a future class on ethics and leadership
-Served as a editor for two major student publications on campus, winning numerous awards from the state where the university is located.
-Assist my alma mater's local alumni club (i.e., serve as facilitator for Q&A for newly admitted students, help with Freshmen send-off picnic)

Entrepeneurship:

-Successfully implemented a business plan for my family's business (reason why I left my first job) for 4 months, saving tremendously on physical plant costs, inventory, etc. Business continues to succeed and gross $20,000 in monthly sales, while improving the quality of life for my father (the business owner)

-Assisted an internet start-up company in writing detailed technology patents for their critical processes. Also did some market research on viability of demand for this product they were coming up with. Process involved trying to revolutionize transaction payments.

-Started a small online writing clinic geared towards international Korean students in finding their voice and writing/communicating effectively to properly assimilate into American society.

Harvardand Stanfordare stretches, and even Dartmouthand Columbia are not at all sure admits, but your chances are slightly better. Are there any programs that would help you achieve your dreams and are a little easier to get into? I'm not saying don't apply to these programs; I'm just recommending that you have 1 or 2 where your chances are better than they are at top 10 b-schools.

Best,
Linda Abraham
