Hi,
Please evaluate my profile:
Israeli, male, aged 27 (28 in a few weeks)
Academics:
BSc. Computer Engineering from Technion (considered very tough and prestigious in Israel, not sure about the reputation abroad). GPA 80%
Edit: Ranked around 50th in sciences and engineering in QS World University ranking
GMAT - taking it in a few days, all tests point to the 730-750 range.
Work experience:
5 yrs. in a big company, including one year as team leader and another year as a systems engineer (supervising key technical issues for several projects, didn't involve direct people management)
Extracurricular:
Probably my weakest point, attended some charity events organized by the company but nothing I lead on my own.
Have some history of overcoming hardships (family illness during studies and a couple of other things) but not sure how relevant it is and also worried it would sound too much like an excuse/begging if I put it on the application.
Target schools - UCLA,Columbia, NYU (would consider any other comparable schools, preferably in the NY/Boston/California areas)
Also, is it still realistic to apply for fall 2011? Would it benefit my chances significantly if I wait for 2012?

Given that the R2 deadlines are coming up very fast (i.e. a few days to a week, and you have yet to complete the GMAT), you are basically limited to applying next year, unless you want to roll the dice for R3, where it's going to be a stretch for most applicants like yourself.
In any case, what I would do is focus on getting the GMAT out of the way first.
Then, go and visit some of these schools if you haven't already. It's worth spending the money to go and visit these schools while class is in session, and right now is probably the best time, so that by the time you are applying in the late summer, you would've gotten a good feel for what the b-school environment is like.
With NY, Boston, California - again, go visit the schools. It sounds like you're targeting the top schools, and there's only so many. In NYC, it's Columbia and NYU. In Boston, it's HBS and MIT. In California, you basically have Stanford and Berkeley in the SF Bay Area, and UCLA and USC in Los Angeles.
Also, by visiting the schools and meeting some of the current students, you'll have a much better sense whether you feel you'll be competitive or not.

OK, so I did the GMAT today and got 760 (49Q, 45V - thought I could do better in quant but the 45 in verbal is way higher than expected so pretty happy with that).
Regarding my target schools - I'm not really shooting for the very top like HBS but rather the 10-20th ranked programs, don't the schools I mentioned belong in that range(UCLA is actually ranked around 30th in most rankings)? Visiting the schools would be a problem since I'm currently working, plus a two-way flight ticket from Israel to the USA is pretty costly (I know it isn't much compared to the program cost, but still...).
Side question - where do you think I can expect scholarships that would cover a decent chunk of the tuition? Top-30, top-50 or lower? I'm specifically interested in top Australian schools (AGSM,Melbourne) since the deadlines there work better for me and I'd consider favourably if I had a good chance for a scholarship there.
