Hi ,
This is to request for your expert opinion and insight into my profile and its suitability for US business schools. Before I begin, I would like to state that my objective is to target only the Ivy League schools in the US, the likes of Stanford, Booth, Sloan, Kellogg etc. I will also be applying to LBS, London and INSEAD, Singapore. One of the major reasons for these choices is sufficient security to be able to cover the cost of the MBA. I would prefer a school that offers reasonable job security in the relevant region ie US/Europe/Asia. I am an Indian national working in London and aware of the challenges present in the market today with regards to ‘right to work’ and residentship.
GMAT: 1st attempt was a 650 48/32. This attempt was with incomplete preparation but with the aim to gain experience. I will be giving my 2nd attempt later this month and expect to score 700+. Please use 720-730 as the score when evaluating my profile.
Education: Bsc in Nautical technology (Distance Learning), awarded first class with distinction. I also hold an international certificate of competency for sailing on merchant ships as 1st officer.
Work Experience: My work experience comprises of 2 parts:
1) As a deck officer on merchant ships 2004-20013.
2) Maritime quality assurance decision support for Shell Trading.
After completing 12 years of schooling, I went out to sea as a Trainee navigation officer and also pursued BSc in Nautical Tech through correspondence. This was a 4 years course. During my time at sea, I progressed from being a Trainee navigation officer to a second officer. I was then selected to work for Maritime quality assurance for Shell. Brief details of my work experience are as below.
Shell International Trading & Shipping Company Ltd, London, UK
Maritime Quality Assurance, July 2013 - Present
Facilitate management and implementation of maritime standards as a maritime expert in the shipping businesses, particularly Oil, Chemical and Petroleum Gas activities.
Shell Ship Management Ltd, Isle of Man, UK.
Second Officer, Liquefied Natural Gas Carrier Fleet, Jan 2012 – July 2013
Develop and implemented optimum vessel route plans as designated navigation officer. Leader of the primary shipboard emergency response team for firefighting and search & rescue. Authorize and supervise critical maintenance operations as the designated Ship Safety Officer.
Shell Ship Management Ltd; Maersk Tankers, Isle of Man, UK; Singapore
Third Officer, Liquefied Natural Gas Carrier & Crude Oil Carrier Fleet, Feb 2008 – Nov 2010
Responsible for collision avoidance and safe worldwide navigation of merchant ships as the Officer in charge of independent navigational watch
Wallem Ship Management Ltd, Hong Kong
Trainee Navigation Officer, General Cargo/Crude Oil Carrier Fleet, Sept 2004 – Mar 2007
Completed mandatory 27 months sea time understudying deck officers and assisting in Ship operations, cargo handling and navigation.
Career prospects: Ideally I would prefer getting into strategy and planning, particularly with an Energy company but I would also be willing to consider management consulting and operations/logistics.
I will be 31 when I start an MBA in fall 2015. Not sure if my age is a disadvantage here. I would appreciate if in your review you could highlight the areas which help my application and those which work against. Also, whether my choice of schools is realistic?
Please advise if I can provide any further information that will be of help in the evaluation.
Thank you.
Kind regards,
Divay.
