A few perspectives here MBAApplicant21A:
  1. Echoing what Jon said, read the article here. The score can be a big deal breaker. This will also be a big issue when it comes to consulting placements.
  2. It will not be fair to brand your experience as average - it sounds pretty different. That said, it would not be eye-popping enough to overcome the GMAT hurdle.
  3. While you may get a break in some of the programs you have mentioned, they may not be worth the effort frankly - do your research before you chase programs that are unlikely to get you where you want/hope to be.
  4. For IIMs, applying next year shouldn't be an issue. But from ISB perspective, sooner the better is the mantra ideally. Since you seem to have put in a lot of effort on GMAT already, also explore GRE - some find it to be easier.

Hope this helps some.

Cheers,

Thanks MG for your guidance, I will try for GMAT once again in 1 month and will try to improve the score to be eligible for a better program.

Hi Experts

I have just got over my very depressing GMAT score of 620 after a preparation of 8 long months and now thinking of applying for some programs in India. Please review my profile and suggest me a suitable path.

My profile::
Indian, Male 29+
My GMAT score: 620 (Q48 V27)
Academics: (10/12/BE): 82% / 78% /72%
Work Exp: 7+ years
Organization: Maharatna PSU (Engineering Sector)
Role: Project Management, Team Leader ( 20 engineers +500 Workers in E&C project)
Award: Winner of Excellent Executive of the Organization Award.

Extra Curricular::

Travel enthusiast
Member of a successful Himalayan Expedition Team (Scaled 16000ft).
Solo Bike Ride across 12 indian cities (1800 KM ride).

Trained Professional Photographer
Winner of State Level Photography competition.

Co- founder of a budding Online Travel Company, offering exclusive packages focused on one part of India, Operational with 80+ hotel tie-ups and local business groups and executed 20+ travel packages in first year of operation.

Post MBA Plan: Management Consulting in a reputed firm, Long Term- Get back to entrepreneurship.

I am very much aware that with this average profile and Low GMAT score it will be very ambitious of me to apply for IIM A,B,C or ISB 1 year programs. WIll be very grateful if somebody guide me whether i can expect a seat in any of the following courses,
MDI Gurgaon NMP
XLRI Jamshedpur PGDM(GM)
IIM Udaipur PGPX
IIM Shillong PGPEX
IIM C IITK IIT M PGPEX VLM

Please suggest if any other comparable program is achievable with my profile coupled with a strong application/recommendation/ interview. Also, i will be grateful if you can sort the programs for me in order of future prospects in terms of my target post MBA goals.

Hey dude,
Honestly, you have a good profile, don't ruin it by applying with a poor GMAT. Would it be reasonable for you to work on the GMAT for the next year and apply next? It would be worth it.

Agree that you should try to take the GMAT again- maybe give yourself a month to regroup and then try a different approach- new test prep and take again in 3 months- this site is great for giving you a plan to follow- I would not wait another 8 mos- try to do a more intense but shorter duration prep.
Best,
Jon
