Profile Evaluation:
Hi james27, thanks for asking for a profile review. Will give my thoughts below.Age 37 male
Born in Taiwan, US Citizen
I’m a first generation immigrant and I will be the first person in my family to get a graduate degree.
Good to highlight first gen college- although biggest impact is for first to get any college degree- not necessarily grad degree- but still impressive for first gen immigrantI plan to apply to business schools this fall in R1 and R2.
GMAT 660 Q47 V35 IR4
I have surpassed the GMAT lifetime limit, so unfortunately I can not take the test again. My highest verbal score is 36 and my highest quant score is 49, but I was not able to get those scores on the same test. My most recent test is 640 Q49 V28 IR5, which I canceled it. Should I reinstate that score so that the Adcom could see that I have scored Q49 twice?
Maybe do keep the Q49 as that is good to see. The 660 overall is going to be somewhat problematic. Have you considered GRE?GPA
Community college 4.0
UCLA science major 3.0 (I got straight A in the last 3 classes to improve my overall GPA above 3.0)
Work Experince
After graduating from college in 2003, I worked in a Fortune 500 Biotech company as a manufacture associate for about two years. I was training new employees within the first four months. Unfortunately, I had to quit because of an injury unrelated to work.
Ever since then, I have been working in my parent’s restaurant. It’s a small restaurant with only 6 employees. Basically, I’m responsible for managing the overall daily operation. I’m also responsible for recruiting and training new employees. The restaurant is not a multi-million dollar business, but it has been in operation for over 30 years.
Some adcom may not give you as much credit for this- but some will- so you need to find the ones who get how hard this work is. Think about your accomplishments- frame it in business terms. Are food costs down? food shrinkage down? Revenue trending up? Think about all you have been effective in doing.
Measure things if needed. Are employees happier now than when you took over? You could do some simple polling a la net promoter-
would you recommend a friend work here? see if you have an upward trend on that question if you ask it every 6 mos. ... You need to show the impact of this and you may be able to leverage it.When I first started working in the business, I built a website to expand our customer base and increase our brand recognition. The second major project that I initiated was remodeling the restaurant’s dining area by using a $15,000 budget. I lead a group of 6 contractors finishing the entire renovation within 8 days to minimize the lost from shutdown.
Letter of Recommendation:
Since my supervisors are my parents, they could not write the letter of recommendation. Could I ask a customer, who has known me and come to our restaurant since we opened, to write a letter of recommendation?
That is an option- although also think about someone in a supervisory role- maybe your food suppliers or key vendors? Your contractors in the renovation? For the other recommender, is it appropriate to ask my supervisor from the biotech company that I worked more than 10 years ago?
A rec letter from 10+ yrs is not ideal. The other possibilities: the current professor or members from Toastmaster.
Career goals:
I have been working in the restaurant since I was a kid. There are so much other things to learn and challenge myself beside serving food. So I want to use MBA as a platform to propel to a different career. There are two paths that I’m considering. The first field that I’m interested developing my career is the health care industry. As an undergraduate, I decided to study in the field of science because I wanted to improve people’s quality of life. After graduating from college, I had a great experience working in the biotech company. So it makes the most sense to go into the health care industry.
The second field that I think I would enjoy doing is consulting. I love solving challenging problems and, since I have lots of experience working in the customer service, I have great people skills. The more I learn about consulting as a career, the more passion I have. However, since I have a low GMAT score and I’m older than most other candidates, if I write business school essays explaining my career goal to go into consulting, it may be a more difficult task than if I were to write an essay explaining my goals about health care industry.
I want to do the full time MBA program because I believe the summer interim will be crucial to help me transition into a different career.
Is there a way to leverage your restaurant/operations knowledge into a specialty consulting role to make the transition easier? think about that....Extracurricular activities:
Since the restaurant open six and half days a week and I have to work there during that time, I don’t have a lot of free time to do any extracurricular activities. So this is an area that will hurt my application. I plan to join Toastmasters over the summer.
Hurry up on the toastmasters! That could be a good addition.Alternative transcript:
