Hi Team,
I am seeking some guidance here on the type of schools I should be aiming for. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Age: 27
Gender: Male
Race: Black(spent 10 year or so in Africa). Speak fluent french.
Work Experience: 5 years in fintech, 2 promotions. For the past 2.5 years, I've been managing a team of 8 people.
Undergrad Major and GPA: 3.16, Finance Major(had a really poor sophomore year but picked it back up). I also passed level 1 of CFA
GMAT: 710
Other experiences: Participated on two separate weeklong trips with an accelerator focused on African markets. During each trip, I worked with startups in Nigeria and Ghana. This was an extracurricular that I did on top of having my day job.
I've been volunteering at mentoring organization for 4 years. I worked with a single high school student for my initial 2 years. He graduated and is now in college. The past 2 years, I've been a team leader for 8 high school students and each student has 2 mentors, so that is 24 people that i lead, and we meet for 2 hours during the school year. We focus on mentorship, SAT prep, critical thinking and writing.
At work, i have led over 6 or 7 volunteering events for groups of 50 people.
Post MBA aspirations: Management Consulting with a long term goal of joining some of strategy group at a multinational focused on expanding in emerging markets.
Please be brutally honest!!
Thanks for posting. You've got a lot of great things going for you: representation from a country that doesn't place too many folks in MBA programs in the states, a solid GMAT, strong leadership skills and ECs, and a level 1 CFA pass. How highly regarded was the fintech firm you worked for? If it's a well-known name or they have successfully raised a fair amount of VC money, this is a definite bonus.
Are you looking at schools in the US? I'd say based on your profile on paper you have a good chance at the M7. Have you looked into any type of scholarship programs for URMs? I appreciate the healthy skepticism, but don't be overly hard on yourself! You've got a great profile.
