Indian male engineer (sigh) from top5 college in India, GPA>8, GMAT 760

Workex: 3.5yrs in global IB (small international chops), 6M in sales trading indian firm, 3 months in fintech (Current)

Decent extracurrics at college (club head, won major competitions), at work (CSR, award), outside work (teaching NGO, active blog)

Recommenders: no big gun b-school alum, 1 each from previous 2 firms as it's been just 3 months at current firm

Woke up late to the MBA dream hence targeting R2 with focus on just M7 (maybe 1-2 from T10)

I know it's a tough shot in M7 for any indian male but any suggestions for school selection? Don't think I've the bandwidth to apply for more than 4 schools.

Also bb are we supposed to start a new post for our profile evaluation or can we tag along as I just did? (btw thanks a ton for this forum, has been my go to place ever since I started exploring)

Hi m7ornothing,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your profile looks good on the surface. Starting with the stats, your undergrad GPA is good, and you have a great GMAT score. So, this part is pretty sorted. Your work experience must demonstrate your career advancement, achievements, impact, and leadership in the workplace. You must work hard to bring a distinctive, appealing narrative with a dynamic personality to the apps to stand out. An excellent M7, profile requires you to showcase your extracurricular activities, awards and achievements, social work experience, and the positive impact you have had on your surroundings and contribution to society! I recommend selecting one or two M7 schools as reach schools that best meet your profile and goals and adding several European/Canadian schools as targets and safety to the list. What are your post-MBA goals? Your post-MBA goals are critical in narrowing down the list of b-schools for you. Therefore, I would like to know more about your profile and post-mba goals to shortlist schools for you. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to the b-schools. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

How to maximize your chances for top MBA programs in R2

Cheers!

Hello m7ornothing,

You have a high GMAT score, good extracurriculars, and decent academic background. On the basis of stats alone, it seems like a decent application.
However, I am not able to understand your fit for M7 schools based on your work experience. It's important to understand how you came to the decision of applying to M7 schools as that will be the heart of your storytelling process.

M7 programs have an acceptance rate of less than 10%. Hence, unless there is a differentiating factor in your narrative it may not work in your favor. At this level, the school chooses the applicant and not the other way round. It's important that you find the uniqueness in your story and understand your career path based on your overall profile. Once you are able to justify the application to yourself, you will be able to confidently address the admissions committee as well.

I can see a lot of interesting story points in your extracurricular activities. You can align them with your interests and career goals to develop the right career trajectory for an M7 application. Remember that each M7 program is different and has a separate USP. Hence the same answers will not work for all programs. You need to align your essay answers with the school's ideals and values. That's also why determining the right school fit is important.
