In short, yes I do think you can just informally get an HBS admissions officer's take on the whole thing. Now, the actual logistics are hard to predict -- you could literally walk in to Dillon House (the admissions building) and the best person for you to speak with could be available, or may be out for the week -- but it won't hurt to try.

One thought: You mentioned that you'd go in to find out about your chances. I'd keep it much more about the process ("I'm a 1L at Harvard Law, and I'm thinking that a JD/MBA may really be the right thing for me. Before I go too far, could you tell me how that process would work?") and less about "Can you tell me my chances??" The latter will probably make them a little more guarded, while the former will be more likely to get them to open up and walk you through the steps you'd need to take to apply to HBS. Of course, in the latter scenario things may go well and before you know it the administrator is asking you questions about your background, giving you an informal take on whether or not you fit the JD/MBA mold, etc., but let that happen naturally. Focus more on the logistics and the process.

Good luck!
