How do applicants with strategy consulting or PE/VC as their long term goal, typically position their themes? Would be great to hear your thoughts on this.

Thanks a bunch!
Ankur

It truly depends on the applicant and the school. The more that this is consistent with an applicant's background, the less the applicant has to do to convince the admissions office that he can make this move. If it's a big career change for the applicant (particularly with PE/VC-type jobs), then the applicant needs to demonstrate that he "gets" the indyustry and has a realistic plan for moving into it. That's a small, tough-to-break-into space for many grads, so demonstrating a deep understanding of the industry (e.g., maybe demonstrating how you have crossed paths with some VCs in your career) goes a long way towards answering this question!

Thanks Scott. Does it make sense for an adcom to see an IB analyst wanting to move into Strategy consulting and later PE/VC? Is it common or unheard of : move from IB to consulting?

Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks.

Oh no, this isn't a weird move at all. You're going from one tough industry to get into to another. As long as your reasons are clear and believable, I think it will be okay!
