Hi,
Hi @SenbonZakura, Let me make some comments about your profile below. Thanks for reaching out to us.
I am trying to evaluate what would be the score I need to achieve and the type of profile I will need to build to pursue an MBA with GMAT. I am yet to give my GMAT, and thinking of taking it in early 2017.
1. Demographic Information:
Age: 27 (July 1989)You are in the perfect age zone for FT MBA study in the US. Being female from the pool from India will definitely be helpful- that in itself is not enough but you will get looked at as there are fewer females in your pool generally.
Gender: Female
Nationality: Indian
2. Educational Background:
Undergrad Major: Civil Engineering
Undergrad College: NIT Surat (Ranked among top 15 engineering institutes in India)
GPA: 6.7/10 (I know its low)This is not first class- and this will be something that you have to manage or at least be aware of in application. In this case, having the higher than avg. GMAT could be very helpful. Also don't make excuses but you may want to address in optional essay what the circumstances were that gave you those grades- extra work? extra curricular involvement? not motivated? No blame- but what did you learn from experience and how are you committed now to doing a first rate job in all your work?
3. Work Experience:
Worked as an Assistant Professor for 1 year in an engineering institute teaching college students.
At present, I have completed 4 years working for the Government of Gujarat(State), in Gujarat Water Supply and Sewerage Board. My department is very strict on hierarchy and almost everyone is stuck in a rut with promotions being awarded on seniority and not work-quality. My current work profile includes cross-checking projects and their implementation, developing action plans for my district regarding water supply, and rural public dealing. Sounds like this may be hard to do - but even without the official promotion or pay, can you find a project where you can be the "champion" and really lead in applications with your results. Adcom will not want to read about how you are stuck in a dead end job and how B school is your lottery ticket out. You have to show that you already are a change agent... so find something to change, improve, redesign!
4. Extracurricular:
Won College Level Dance competitions.
Hobbies: Dancing, Soap-making, Reading, Writing short-stories. We need to pop up the impact in describing these activities.
5. MBA Goals: I want to work for the consumer industry. I know this is completely opposite to what I am doing right now, but I really have this goal in mind and this is why I want to pursue an MBA.
So when you say the "Consumer" industry- what does that mean? Product management for a consumer packaged goods company? Social media? customer interface with a tech company? This needs to be much more specific.
Please guide me as what colleges, GMAT Score I should be looking at. I suggest that you look at schools that have very strong experiential learning- and many top MBA programs do- as you will need to get real experience before transitioning to new role. You will need to put some effort into getting a top GMAT score to counter the gpa. I suggest seeing what that score is- and then targeting top 30 programs- depending on score- and then focus on school ranges once you have the score. It sounds to me like you are not really sure what you want to do- and this needs to be explored before applying for the MBA. We work with clients to help them discover their "why" and where they most come alive. I could see you benefiting from an exercise like this. If you want to do a free consult with us, you can go to our website at StratusPrep.com and we can share more. You need a compelling WHY to be competitive at any top US program and right now I don't see it in the info you provided. I think you will get some great insight about yourself if you give yourself that gift- we could tell you more about different ways we could help you uncover your "why!" Good luck to you! And remember that there is greatness in you- sometimes you just need someone to help unlock the door into your most fabulous self. We'd love to help!
Thank You.
