Hi experts,
Could you provide an evaluation of my profile and my chances of actually getting into these schools? I gave an attempt just today and might give another attempt at GMAT if the popular opinion remains that my current score is not good enough considering my profile and the kind of business schools I want.
I intend to apply to the top-20 B-Schools (per the latest FT rankings) and would be considering a consultancy job. Target schools are Sloan, Booth, Columbia, INSEAD, Stanford and Harvard.
GMAT: 720 (V-40/ Q-47/ IR-5/ AWA-TBA).
Female, Indian (Mumbai), 27 yo
Educational qualification - Law graduate from one of the top 10 law schools in India. However, I have graduated with a 67% grade which places me slightly above average at my law school.
Work experience - 4 years work experience.
1. Worked for 2 years at one of the top-6 law firms in India.
2. Currently working at the #1 law firm in India from the past 2 years.
Work description - M&A and private equity transactions. My work profile includes drafting transaction documents, negotiations, conducting due diligence and legal research.
I have received consistently good ratings at both jobs (and will get recommendations from both my ex-boss and my current boss). I have also recently been promoted to a Senior Associate, which is one of the 3 promotions we receive in our entire career as legal professionals at law firms.
Extra-curricular activities: Volunteering at NGOs that provide free legal aid to disadvantaged women.
Thanks a lot!
Hi
AkanshaS- If you are in general targeting this group of schools, then yes, a higher GMAT (ideally upwards of 740) will help. Yes, as a lawyer, you bring some diversity by way of your profile, but these schools are quite competitive. Have people made it in the past with your score (and lower)? Yes, but by boosting your score, you do enhance your chances in general. The slightly worrying aspect in your score is the Quant part, not the total - Q47 is only 67 percentile. Try and improve on that when you retake, specifically, in addition to other things. If you are looking at a top-20 seat (and not necessarily an M7 seat), your current GMAT score will certainly get you there, but the top-20 (FT) is a very broad category, and some of the schools there may not really match up to H/S/W standards. We think that you are possibly looking only at the top 7 odd, though that is just a guess. Correct us if that is not the case.
- A bit curious about your career goal choice - you are working in M&A and private equity, but want to move to consulting. Generally, people go the other way. Of course, it is still possible, and an MBA will help you get there. Btw, for the top schools, the difference between the top law firms (Amarchand(s) et al, Khaitan etc) isn't much - if you are talking of Indian heritage firms. Working for a global law firm can lend more visibility.
- Other than that, maybe look at including Kellogg in the list. Kellogg is strong on consulting, and has had admitted many Indian lawyers in the past, so they do seem to value that background in general (M&A/PE).
- Overall, you do have some time at this point, so see if the retake is possible.
Hope this helps. Feel free to come back with more queries as needed.
