Hi Naval,

I’ll make two quick points, which you may consider in making your decision:

Given where you are in your professional career, do you think you’ll get opportunities to improve your profile, say more responsibilities, some leadership experience, opportunity to be part of a challenging project, a promotion, and so on? Because just by staying there for another year is not going to improve your profile.

Second, a higher score, no doubt, will help, but your current score is around the median of most of your target schools, which makes you competitive as far as test score is concerned.

Whenever you decide to apply, do a thorough postmortem of your R1 applications to know where you faltered.

Hi Admission Consultants

Could you please help me provide a direction about my applications?

I have applied to Kelley and Purdue in R1 but I am not sure of if I'll get the interview call. I am now comptemplating of waiting for one more year to improve on my GMAT score and profile in terms of work-experience, and extra-curricular activities.

Is it worth waiting for one more year to try for my target schools or settling for a lower ranked school (if I get selected this time) would be just fine given that my primary focus is job opportunities after MBA??

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My profile below for reference -

Indian male
GMAT Score 700 Q49V35 IR5, AWA 5

X th : 92.4% out of 100%
XIIth : 94.6% out of 100%
Undergraduated ( NIT Hamirpur) : 8.51 out of 10 on GPA scale.

Work Experience : 3 years+ in sales & marketing analytics
1. Business Associate in Sales and Marketing firm
2. Leading a team of 4 and in dialogue with clients on a regular basis.

Not impressive extra-curriculars

Target Schools : Kelley, Purdue, Tepper, Kenan-Flagler, Johnson, UCLA Anderson and other 10-20 ranked schools.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Naval- I am former Kenan-Flagler adcom and I can say with these stats here you will have a hard path for admission- not impossible but you have no extracurriculars to set you apart and just 3-4 yrs work and the 700 GMAT is not going to pop out of this pool. You may fare best here at Purdue.
Certainly you can try to spend the next year working on GMAT and also if you start now- in a year you can have more compelling extracurriculars- we offer a professional development program where we work with clients for a year or more before submitting and do an audit for clients on all areas that matter- we have several former adcoms like me that can help you do this. You're score is not too far off so I think you are still in play here, so wait for the decision and then make an informed decision. A better score will always help you so if you can improve weigh that. Also, how old are you, you seem to be a more junior applicant so another year would not hurt especially if you are spending that year improving your profile

Thanks Veritas Prep for your suggestion!!

I'll turn 25 in Feb'17. I am certainly looking forward to improve my profile but also trying my luck at Tepper this year (Roiund 2). What do you think about my chances about Tepper? I have Purdue's interview on Tuesday. It would be great if you could provide me some pointers on it.

Also, in terms of improving my profile, will only 8 months of work in an NGO or pursuing a hobby would be suffice for strenghting my profile apart from work-ex? I am more worried about this aspect than anything else.

You could make some Headway in the area of extracurriculars within eight months if you went about it strategically. First of all I'd recommend that you stick to something close to home. And what I mean by that is something that's related to what you already doing or your current interest. So that it doesn't look phony and raised red flags. And also it will allow you to add more value quickly at that organization. One of the nice things about having extracurricular or Community involvement is that you have the ability to get a leadership position before a business will generally Turn You Loose. So it's kind of a training ground for leadership stuff and I would recommend that you keep that in mind. There are a lot of agencies out there that are like brokerage houses for volunteering opportunities, such as nyc cares. This is a pretty commonly overlooked aspect of the application for Indian candidates and I think it would set you apart.

I think you would be competitive at Tepper this year. On the ECs front, 8months is certainly a long enough amount of time but you just have to make sure you are using this time wisely to make an impact and generate some strong interpersonal experiences. So ultimately it will be up to you how valuable this 8mos will be
