Thanks for the additional information!

I'd reckon that safe schools for you are going to be top 40-20 in the US. I define safe as the candidate having more than a 50% chance of being interviewed. You also need to identify 'target' and 'reach' schools. You could look to 19-15 as target and 14-1 as reach. That is just an example of how you might begin framing schools.

Although it seems like you have great work experience and some nice brands on your resume - the slightly lower than average GMAT for the Indian demographic, school rank, GPA and most importantly - the fact that you haven't lived outside India are all combining to weaken your overall app.

Hi Deepak,

Congratulations on the GMAT score. It certainly helps to counteract the undergraduate performance. Any particular reason for taking the extra time to complete your degree?

Look up the following colleges in Canada, Rotman, Schulich and Ivey. In the US, Vanderbilt, Rochester Simon, University of Illinois- Urbana Champaign and Boston Carroll should be achievable. Good Luck and God Bless!

Hey Everyone,
I would be really thankful to you all if you could just let me know where I stand.

GMAT score - 730(Q50 V38)
Btech - 55 percent from a pretty normal college and I took an extra year to complete it.
Class 12th - 80%
Class 10th - 83%

Work Ex - At present I have 3 years of experience in banking operations that includes 2 years in Barclays as a frontline banker working on email and telephone platform. I am currently an analyst at american express banking corporatuion providing Global Account Management for Travelers Cheque, Gift Cheque & Prepaid Card products to American Express Selling Partners globally (Americas, EMEA and JAPA region).
I have done alright at work and have a couple of awards to show.

I have been working with a world renowned NGO for over an year now and have helped them in various projects for which they are will to fill any recommendations for me.

Co curriculars are decent

I am looking to do an MBA in finance and will hopefully clear the FRM exams before starting with it.

Please let me know what are the safe schools for me in Canada and United States. I would want to work in the finance (risk) sector at a major bank post my mba.

Just to make it more clear my degree is from 2008 - 2012, however I did not complete all exams on time and my transcripts reflect that.

Hi Deepak,

You have a decent profile. Your work experience and GMAT Score are really good, but your GPA is on a lower side. But, it can be certainly offset by submitting a strong application essays. In Canada I would suggest you to target B-Schools like Rotman, Schulich, University of Calgery, HEC Montreal, Queens, McGill and Ivey etc. These business schools are really good into finance.

You may also gauge your chances of getting admission to top business school by trying this amazing tool https://bit.ly/1C9o2Md

Hey dude,

I agree that you could help us evaluate you by giving us a wee bit more info: https://bit.ly/mbafcGC

But from what I see here, I'd roughly estimate your sweet spot to be about Top 20, and therefore your safe schools would be about in the 30-50 range.

But that's really roughly,

Best,
Jon

To be honest, I'm a bit more reserved than some of the other posters here. Your GMAT, while good, isn't exceptional for your pool. I like your work experience in that you're front office but I'd need to know a lot more here. Your GPA is what's causing me to pause here. A 55% isn't great and you didn't appear to attend a tier I / II feeder school. And the extra year thing is concerning. You might have a good reason here but, based on what you've written, I don't know. At first blush, it seems you MIGHT be stretching into the top 20. I'd obviously have to know a lot more about you but there are some flags and, given your applicant pool, that could be an issue.

Well thank you for your comments. I'm aware that a top 20 is going to be very difficult. I just want to know that do I have a good chance of getting in to the Canadian colleges, Sauder being my first choice.

Well Sauder's median GMAT is a 646 - so with your rock solid 730, you're definitely in contention my friend!

Hi Deepak,

I haven't mentioned Sauder School of Business as your GMAT and work experience are really good. And you have fair chances of getting admission in schools which are good than Sauder like Rotman, Schulich, University of Calgery, HEC Montreal, Queens, McGill and Ivey etc. Sauder is an average business school. And since you are more interested in finance, the above mentioned business schools are really good in to finance.

Oops! Slips do happen.

If Canada is on your radar, Sauder should be on your list in addition to the others. Good Luck!
