Long time lurker, first time poster.
Long story short I think I've burned myself out on the GMAT. I am retaking on Saturday and hoping to score between 680 - 700. My highest score thus far has been a 640 (actual GMAT score). I have a background in business development in media (Newspaper/Websites not sexy, I realize) where I ran a small publication for a large media company in the Southeast before shifting to marketing and currently a Database Marketing Analyst for a large regional bank. I'm looking to get into brand management at a CPG. Dream job would be Brand Management at Diageo. I am hoping to get into Vanderbilt for their brand management concentration or Notre Dame (dream school since I was a child). Additional suggestions welcome, I've looked into Indiana and Wisconsin for their pedigree in brand management but saw mostly mid-west CPGs similar to ND or Vandy w/o the prestige of the school name.
My biggest concern is if I do not improve on my current GMAT, what are my chances? Additional info, married, white, 28-year-old male in marketing w/an advertising degree from VCU ($1 to anybody who knew us before the Final Four run) trying to a get idea of where I stand. Thanks for any help.

Hi tanickle,
First, do not worry too much about your GMAT test date. Most candidates do not know how their GMAT scores are reviewed by admissions teams.
When you apply to business school, your GMAT score is self-reported on your application. What this means is that you report your highest score, and it is then verified when you are accepted. Admissions teams will only focus on your highest score.
If you take the GMAT test and do not receive the score you are hoping for, you can always take the test again. In fact, a lot of people recommend expecting to take the test at least twice. Retaking the test is not the worst thing in the world.

Actually, you might think it counter-intuitive, but B-development in media is a great job to have. They B-schools don't see that many people with your profile, and in my experience they do quite well (uniqueness factor). You should definitely have a shot at it if you can show a( leadership in your job b( some interesting extracurrics/volunteerwork/entrepreneurial projects.
In the meantime though I agree that you gotta just start applying without your better GMAT score, adding a school or three where your GMAT lies around the average score of the admits for the school.
