Hi Vaibhav,

Everything else is great in your profile. The GMAT score is a tad low for an Indian engineer applicant - while it will be okay for the European MBA programs, a 720+ score would be desirable for these, and you could say, a must for the American MBA programs. Esp if you are looking to apply to top 30 MBA programs.

The Masters GPA is solid- it will not be a negative, but I don't see it making it up for the 700 GMAT score. So my opinion still is that you should retake. The past year has been extremely competitive for Indian applicants, and we don't yet know how this year will fold out. So my suggestion is that improve the one thing that can pull you down in your profile.

Your Engg profile is not a negative thing (most b-schools have about 20%- 35% class coming from Engg/ STEM backgrounds). However b-schools will be interested in probing your personality deeper than your being an engineer. In your application you must highlight your leadership skills and your achievements at work. Quoting your words- "I am working parallely with our clients situated all over the world interacting them" - experiences such as these will give you an opportunity to highlight work related leadership/ achievements and impact created.

Hi Vaibhav776,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Starting with stats, your undergrad GPA is good. I suggest you try to improve your GMAT score by 20-30 points to maximize your chances. On the work front, your 3+ years of experience can provide examples of leadership. You will need to explain the roles and responsibilities you have undertaken and the impact you have had on the organization.

I'd like to know your post-MBA goals. Your post-MBA goals will be crucial in school selection. Because your business school serves as a stepping stone in your career, it is critical to assess how well the school aligns with your post-MBA goals. I would need more details about your profile to guide you more on this. However, you may want to read an article on how to choose the right MBA program, it will give you some insight :)

Regarding your concern, your masters should not be an issue if you address it correctly in your essays. For example, in their Why MBA essay, a candidate may state, "I have a master's degree in engineering, which allows me to grasp highly technical concepts, but I need an MBA to develop financial and marketing abilities to achieve my goal of becoming a senior manager in the XYZ industry." As a result, you must adequately explain this in your essays. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to the b-school. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Hi Vaibhav776

Obviously, B school will consider your highest degree. Since you, a good average in Master's; should be turned into a positive prospect while you narrate your application essays. Professional arc looks with team handling experience, but with 3 years work experience it slightly difficult to target 1-year programs (the mostly UK & European schools). Said that you can target a good number of schools with 2 years duration program in the US and Asia with 700(would be good if you re-think of GMAT again, until you only want to target top 15-20 programs).

Other than your career and GMAT, we would also need details on your EC's, awards and achievements,c community experience, and post MBA goals to shortlist the right set of schools to target.

You can try the chances of your B schools to target with our free tool.

Vaibhav776, talking about IIMs most of the executive programs have average GMAT 700+ and it is 710 for ISB. I suggest you increase your score and also work on the extracurricular part as well (it is also an important aspect of mba application) then apply for the schools. You may want to read the article on Role of Extracurricular activities in your MBA application to get some better insights. :)

Hi Vaibhav776

You should try and increase your score by 20+ points to have a better chance at European and US schools. The Master's in engineering can in fact be an asset for you if your post-MBA role is aligned to your current work. The GPA is great, btw.

700 should give you a shot at ISB and Indian schools, with strong applications.

Hello Vaibhav776,

Hope this finds you well.

We agree with the thoughts shared above. You have a fine profile that you can definitely boost with an improved GMAT score and this will help accentuate your chances at business schools around the world as well as in India.

The good thing is that you still have some time.

All the best!

Hi Vaibhav,

It is not a disadvantage to have a Master's degree prior to your MBA application. Most B-Schools see that as academic progression and seniority is also considered. While your Bachelor's score is a little on the lower side, it should be complemented by your high Master's score and should not pose any problems.

700 GMAT score is quite good but it also means that your essays and CV need to be excellent to target Top 20 programs globally. Your experience of working with international clients will also be useful to highlight career impact. There seem to be some positives however we can only understand your chances better if we can get some more details from you regarding your target industry and schools.

I have compiled a general list of top MBA programs that you can consider based on your profile:

1) Cornell: Johnson
2) Virginia: Darden
3) Duke: Fuqua
4) CMU: Tepper
5) Oxford
6) Cambridge
7) INSEAD
8) HEC Paris
9) RSM: Rotterdam
10) SDA Bocconi
11) Rotman
12) UBC Sauder
13) UWO: Ivey
14) IESE

Hello Vaibhav,
Your profile seems promising. The GMAT score is also good enough to land you an interview call at tier 2 European / US B-schools. Even though the experience is a bit on lower side.(No of Years.)

Your Masters will definitely give you an edge during the selection process. However try to transition to commercial aspects (planning, budgeting, costing etc.) of the business in the current responsibility in addition to suggesting innovative problem solving approaches. This makes you stand out during the interview evaluation.

I will also suggest you to apply to tier 1 Indian B-Schools (ISB, IIM A & IIM B)this year to have an experience of the MBA process & try your luck so that you are groomed while you add up your experience. I have been guiding students for the past 3 years after passing out from IIM-A (PGPX).

You can also check out my Linkedin Page below to get some idea about my work. Lets connect to discuss this further.
