First of all, Linda, I want to say I enjoy
accepted.com's blog - very informative and helpful. Would you mind giving my profile a look?
Age at matriculation: 30
Race/Nationality: White American Male
Years of work experience: 7
UG GPA: 3.6 in Mechanical Engineering from average public
GMAT: 770 (Q49, V47)
Work Experience: Mostly product design for small manufacturers. I have some "job-hopping" early in my career due to a desire to return home to work for my grandfather's business, and a fairly quick exit when it didn't work out. (I feel my time here was very valuable, but I can see how an AdCom wouldn't like it - is this a good place for the optional essays?) I am now on a much more stable path now and have been at my current position for the last 2.5 years (3.5 at matriculation). In those 2.5 years, I was asked to relocate across the country when my company was purchased and my office was closed (25 of 30 in the office were laid off). I perform a variety of tasks at my current position, primarily coordinating a team based in multiple manufacturing facilities and departments to produce custom product solutions based for customer-specific projects.
Extracurriculars: Spent 4 years as a youth basketball coach for a local organization. It wasn't volunteer work - the parents were very involved and paid a lot of money to be a part of the program. Managed practices with 20+ kids of varying abilities while their very involved parents watched my every move very closely. It was intense and very difficult at first! I was forced to drop this when I relocated 1.5 years ago - I have 2 children and my wife has been attending school at nights. Had significant UG extracurriculars, but I'm not sure how relevant they are given my age.
Post MBA goals: Cleantech and/or corporate sustainability (I can tweak this somewhat for each target schools). I'd prefer to live in the Bay Area post-graduation, but that is definitely not a must.
Target Schools: Haas, Ross, Kellogg, McCombs, +another safety type school (open to suggestions)
I have a somewhat unique profile, but I worry that it isn't unique enough and just out there in no-man's land. Are my targets realistic? I'd also like suggestions for programs with solid cleantech connections outside the top 15 for a safety.
Thanks for your help!
. I appreciate it.
You are a competitive candidate for the schools on your list, and you have chosen your target programs well. If you want another safety school, and I'm not sure you need it, consider
.
It's hard for me to comment on your job hopping 4+ years ago without knowing how many jobs you had and what were your responsibilities. It is not unusual for someone to take a few jobs to "land" at a good fit. If you can show 2.5 years at one company (your most recent position) and solid growth throughout, you should be OK. Again, depending on the details and how much you bounced around, it may or may not be necessary to explain it.
