Hi Paul

Thanks
Karthik

Karthik,

You have a great profile in the making. Finance + analytics skills are highly relevant in the current business environment and they will stand you in good stead in the years to come.

For now, I think your GMAT is not competitive at the b-schools on your mind. It will run at Simon, but its non-competitive score at other b-schools (for an Indian male) . Your work experience is also on the lower side. Considering these two key admissions criteria, I'd suggest you wait it out for a year, work hard to make your profile all the more attractive to the top b-schools and then apply to your best possible options.

If you think you can retake the GMAT by December 15th and also work upon your application material parallely, then its an option worth considering.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply.

Do I stand a chance in Kelley / Mendoza / Emory with my current profile and GMAT score?

If not what other ranked colleges do you suggest for me?

Thanks a lot
Karthik

Kartik,

You can take a shot. Do clarify via the optional essay that you have the quant rigor (as shown through your analytics background) and the communication skills required to be competitive in an MBA.
If it does not work out, it will still be a learning experience for next year's applications.

Thanks for sharing your profile. I think you have to issues I would work on. 1)WE - you are on the younger end of the scale. Schools will be looking for more work experience os you can either get more / better of it or you can highlight your maturity and why now is the ideal time for you as well as what you can bring to the student community at this age. 2)GMAT - It is too low for most of your schools I would aim to retake and see if you can bump it up to be more competitive. You don't want to go into the process with two question marks especially at your age

Hi Karthik,

I’ve a slightly nuanced reply.

Your GMAT score is around the median of all your target schools with the exception of Ross. There is no doubt that higher score will help, but once you reach around the average/ median, you’re competitive. Moreover, you’ve a solid undergrad performance.

As far as work experience is concerned, it’s on the lower side (average for most schools is 5 years). Having said that, if you think you’ve stood out among your peer group, have had a faster-than-normal career growth (which seems the case from what you’ve mentioned), and have few solid professional experiences to share, then you can apply. Quality of work experience, even if it’s less, matters.

Write strong applications, and you can be competitive.

So yes, you are young and your GMAT score is on the low side but you seem to have some nice professional achievements on your resume as well. So I would not say that it is pointless to apply at this stage, if you can highlight all those achievements (anything that can be measured and compared to others in order to show that you stand out among your peers is especially important) and bring out an outstanding essay. So while you are facing a somewhat uphill battle, you can give it a try but make sure you focus on all the right things in order to show how much you’ve actually done already despite your age. (I am sure some older applicants have fewer accomplishments on their resume!)

I would say Booth would really be a stretch though.

I would also recommend working with a professional in your situation as helping applicants that have disadvantages on paper is exactly what a good admissions consultants excel at.

Needless to say, trying to improve that GMAT score would also be worthwhile if you are up for it. You did improve it a lot last time, so do you think you could do that again?

Good luck!
