Hi all,
Took the GMAT yesterday and received a 710 (Q46 V41 IR5). Not too happy with my score, so I'm wondering if a retake is optimal. Here's my profile --
Demo: East Asian / F / 26yo / USA
Undergrad: Full ride
Top private (non ivy), GPA 3.6, double major in Film + Econ
Work: Major television network in the US
- I've also job hopped a lot & freelanced, given the nature of the entertainment industry. Not a lot of promotions sadly. Not sure if admissions will look too fondly upon this.
I have a decent references, but not a lot of extracurriculars sadly. I’ve ran a couple 5kms & weightlift but nothing extraordinary to note. Did not do athletics in UG (regretfully).
Hoping to transition into gaming / stay in film/tv post MBA.
Thanks!
Although your score is low for Stern, go ahead and apply. Putting together solid applications which justify the goals, the need for an MBA and specifically, WHY that b-school should help. This would apply for all the 3 target b-schools. With your diverse profile, it will likely work for you.
One thing I noticed is, you have pointed out a lot of profile flaws in your description. I hope that is only to give a realistic picture about your profile. When you work upon the applications, it will help to focus upon your strengths and how you can contribute to the b-school community through your diverse experience.
Here's an article that explains this.
In terms of your work profile- explaining freelance work can be a little tricky. My suggestion is that you show growth in the complexity of work and bigger achievements. You can also use the optional essay to explain the job changes and why they made sense for you. These will help you overcome the lack of designation changes. That said, I will need to understand more about the nature of freelance work - were you interacting with clients, adding value through your inputs (which may be different from client views) and helping them achieve important milestones? Regarding references- try getting them from people who are well placed in the industry (and you have worked with them recently) if you are currently working as a freelancer. If you are employed, then get them from a direct supervisor.
