Hi, any guidance much appreciated.

Background and nationality: Asian American (Filipino)

Undergrad Information: lower ranked state school; finance major; 3.42 GPA

Grad school: law school tier 2 (50-100 ranked) low gpa

GMAT: 760 (Q49, V47)

Work experience and leadership: 3 years non-profit attorney helping indigent clients with legal issues; 1 year concurrently working with small businesses with transactional issues and some alternative dispute resolution; currently working in government procurement (will have around 6 months on job by time of application)

Community and others: martial arts and tennis

Post MBA goals: pivot to consulting

I'd like to apply ED Columbia for 2024 matriculation. Also looking at Booth, Wharton, MIT, Ross, Tuck, Yale. Would attend Columbia if accepted ED of course.

Hey DataInsufficiency,

Your profile looks strong in certain areas but also has some room for improvement.

On the positive side, your GMAT score of 760 is impressive and may help you stand out in the competitive pool of MBA applicants. Your work experience in both non-profit and transactional law, as well as your current role in government procurement, show that you have a diverse range of experience and skills. Your community's involvement in martial arts and tennis is also great to see.

On the other hand, your GPA from both your undergraduate and graduate studies may raise some red flags for admissions committees. While a 3.42 GPA from a lower-ranked state school is not ideal, it may not be a significant hindrance if you have other strong aspects of your profile, such as your GMAT score and work experience.
However, a low GPA from a tier-2 law school could be more problematic, especially when applying to top-ranked MBA programs.

In terms of your target schools, you have a mix of highly competitive programs, such as Columbia, Booth, and Wharton, as well as some slightly less selective programs like Tuck and Ross. Your chances of getting into these schools will depend on how well you present your strengths and overcome any weaknesses in your profile.

Overall, it's important, to be honest with yourself about your profile and to focus on presenting yourself in the best light possible in your application.

If you need more help, we'd be happy to setup a call and give more pointers on how to improve your profile and the right schools you should target.

That's a really strong verbal score there. Congrats! Here's your profile evaluation by us:

Academics: Your undergraduate GPA of 3.42 from a lower-ranked state school and low GPA in law school may be a concern for top MBA programs, but your GMAT score of 760 is a strong point. This high score indicates strong verbal and quantitative abilities, highly valued by MBA programs.

Work experience: Your experience as a non-profit attorney and government procurement professional shows a commitment to serving and solving problems for others. However, your scattered work experience may be perceived as lacking focus. You will need to show how your experiences have prepared you for management consulting, why you are interested in consulting, and certain transferable skills from your current experience to future role.

Career Goals: Your goal of pivoting from law to management consulting is fairly common. You have a very clear vision about solving specific issues in consulting and this will act in your favor both in essays and during interviews. Be clear about how an MBA will help you achieve your goals.

Extracurriculars: Tennis training could be a positive if you can somehow link it to your management consulting goal by showing a skill you bring from this experience

School fit: CBS's focus on practical, on-the-job training, its location in New York City and practitioners teaching at the school could make the school a good fit for you.

You might want to have a mix of aspirational, realistic and safe schools considering that you clearly have both strong and weak points in your profile.
