Hello All,
I am looking for some advice/chances on what my top choices for schools are:
Work experience:
11 months at a technology consulting firm in their strategy/transformation group
8 months at a boutique operations consulting firm
1.25 years at a hot pre-IPO technology company (Dropbox/Uber/Airbnb) in a operations role (performance in top 10-15%). Recently promoted to a S&P/Analytics role for a new product, will start this role soon
Extra curriculars:
National Board for a fraternity I chartered in college (this is an alumni position that I am doing after college)
Participate in Co-Ed sports leagues (Volleyball, Football)
Volunteer and help with planning at career center for my alma mater (currently living in the same city as my alma mater but will move soon for new role)
Stats:
Undergrad: Top 15-25 range, Econ/Math degree
Race/nationality: Asian
Sex: M
GMAT Score: 740, 50 Q, 41 V
Undergrad GPA: 3.5
Goal of MBA: Develop better leadership skills and network, want to stay in tech and come out in a strategy or higher level operations role (think a GM at a tech company)
Target schools: Stanford, Harvard, Booth, Kellogg, Haas - would love a shot at HS if possible
I know my weak point is my tenure in consulting. I am also wondering if I should even go to school or not with my goal

Provided you have reasonable explanations for your short consulting stints, your profile has no red flags that would hold you back. At the same time, I don't see anything especially distinctive in the profile you shared that would make Stanford or HBS seem realistic (it may well be that when I get to know your profile in the flesh, that distinctiveness will come out -- perhaps in your personal/family story, for example). But Booth, Kellogg, Haas and other top 10 schools do seem realistic. Regarding your Do I Need an MBA question, the answer is probably you don't *need* one -- you could achieve your goals with performance, networking, and time. But an MBA could accelerate your goals and give you more choices in terms of the organizations you can fulfill them through. Great questions. I actually worked with a lot of tech folks this past year who were wondering the same things re: which schools would be best and should they even go. We have advisors from some of the biggest tech firms and the feedback we've gotten is that they don't tend to "promote" getting an MBA so much for their existing employees (except for part-time in certain cases), but they certainly do hire from the top 10 schools. Many top schools are adjusting their offerings for technology (eg. there are classes at Kellogg now that require coding knowledge - this wasn't the case several years ago). So, I'm biased because I got an MBA then went to work in consulting, focused on the tech sector, but I think it could help, especially if you want to go into one of the premier firms. Regarding your chances, I think you hit the minimum requirements for the top 10 schools (assuming you can mitigate the job changes directly) but you'd need to really focus on differentiating yourself because there are a LOT of people coming from consulting who want to go into technology (esp for HBS, Stanford etc). As part of our offering, we set our clients up with post-top 10 MBA professionals who are already on the path you're seeking (eg. we have a strategy person at Google, a strategy/marketing person at Groupon, etc etc etc). Having conversations with people who have "been there" will be important for you in order to ensure that you're focused on the role MBAs play in tech companies - the adcom needs to see that you understand the dynamics of the industry and how an MBA could help.
