I am interested to know about answering essays when applying to MBA programs.
I have three years of nonprofit background and a BS in Business with a concentration in Entrepreneurship, and I have several solid essays about my goals for the future that combine these two: working in entrepreneurial non-profits (a growing trend).
What if this is not really what I want to do? I really want to get the experience of an MBA - internships, network, more accounting/finance courses, and want to change careers into branding/marketing. Is it bad to write essays that you know will be more respected by AdComs, and change your career direction once you get into programs? Or do you need to write essays that reflect your actual goals even if that career direction is not reflected in your pre-MBA applications?

You ask a great question but one with a fatal flaw: how do you know that essays about nonprofit entrepreneurship "will be more respected by AdComs"? Admissions officers read the goals that applicants state with great skepticism precisely because they know a large percentage of applicants are stating goals that they *think* the adcoms want to hear. Take my word for it when I say that many, many applicants state social entrepreneurship goals. It's true that in your case, stating such goals will have greater credibility because you've already done nonprofit work, but nonprofit goals will hardly make you stand out from other applicants.
Your marketing goals sound perfectly logical and organic to what you've been doing in your career (since fundraising work is related to marketing). So as long as you can explain how you have learned about marketing as a career and how you have done the due diligence to make sure it's the right career for you, the adcoms will be totally on board with it. The fact that your marketing goals are not social impact or nonprofit related is hardly a negative. Indeed, adcoms may read your goals with relief after having slogged through dozens of "save the world" essays. And they won't dump you in the category of applicants who "just want an MBA to make money" because your nonprofit experience shows you are a well-rounded person of substance.
