I want to ask a silly question.
Why are GMAT questions sometimes classified as sub 600, 600-700 or 700+ level. Shouldn't the questions be classified on a 6-51 Quant and Verbal scale or maybe on a percentile scale like that in ESR? Say someone scores Q42 V51 with Total score 740. Q42 is 45 percentile, whereas 740 is 97 percentile. Surely Q42 level questions cannot be classified as the hardest 700+ level questions, whereas the overall score is 700+.

The scoring on GMAT is based on number of people who get a question correct. And hence, a score above 600 or 700 means a person is able to solve questions above a respective percentile score. Questions with those tags are representing the inherent difficulty and is definitely not how the Official GMAT is tagging question inside the system. And even within 700 level, we often find questions of varying difficulty.

The 'classification system' that you're referring to is based a great deal on 'convenience.' Since most GMATers don't have an immediate understanding of Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores, describing a question as a "Q33 difficulty level" won't mean much to most people, but describing a question as being in the "600 - 650 range" is far easier for someone to comprehend (since most GMATers think in terms of their respective OVERALL Score Goals). In the broader sense, many GMATers become too fixated on the 'implied level' of the questions that they're working on - instead of what really matters: defining WHY they're getting questions wrong and becoming more efficient at approaching the overall Exam.
How have you been scoring on your CATs/mocks (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for each)? What is your overall goal score and when are you planning to take the GMAT?
