Hi,

Without going into all the details, my intention is to apply toward an area MBA program here in Texas offering an emphasis and/or concentration toward Healthcare Administration.

Facts:

cuGPA 3.8
Three years of continuous employement as an EMT in an area ER.
One year as a Research Assistant at a top 5 medical school.
One year (current job) as an area Physics teacher.
Student Body President during college (two years)
Class President (one year)
Numerous academic and/or leadership scholarships.
Elected by college officials for numerous state and federal leadership forums.

Goal:

My vision is to parlay my experience (clinical exposure, research aspect/wet lab experience, and/or physics (math and science background), coupled with my proven leadership abilities, toward some type of management and/or leadership role with a healthcare network. Specifically, my "brass ring", per se, is to one day manage and direct a top research institution here in Texas - which I realize will take years of investment.

Tentatively, I've reviewed a few programs here in Texas. Surprisingly, the average gpa is lower than I expected for many business schools, while at the same time I know they're placing more of an emphasis toward work experience.

On its face, do I come off as a potentially strong candidate?

I ask because I'm not sure as to which programs I may or may not be competitive for.

Always,

I won't blow smoke. Often I have to temper expectations, but in your case, you may be "under applying" by focusing on just Texas schools. MBA programs love some non-traditional candidates, and as an EMT (with some life sciences research experience), you could be very attractive. Now it seems you may also ace the GMAT to add to your solid gpa and scholarships. So get ready to work hard on those essays, and make sure you have compelling/well-constructed career goals (given you have moved around a bit) but you may surprise yourself with your results in the top 15 if you put a ton of effort into the process. They won't take many EMTs, but not too many will ever apply.

always206,
Based on the info you provided you do seem like a legitimate, competitive candidate for a Texas MBA program. You will probably want to focus special attention in your application in explaining how your current teaching role fits into your long-term career path, and if you are aiming high, like Texas McCombs, then you will want to have an appropriate GMAT (690 or ideally higher). Seeing a resume would give me a better idea of our profile ([email protected]).

Hi,
One of my clients just drew my attention to a new organization, the Business School Alliance for Health Management.
https://bahm-alliance.org/members.php. For applicants interested in heathcare, the BAHM membership list is a good source of MBA schools concentrating in healthcare.

Our Members
Membership in the Alliance is open to healthcare management programs at top business schools across the country that have shown a commitment to research and teaching (led by research-based faculty), as well as service in the health sector. Member institutions believe that by joining forces through BAHM, they can more effectively recruit and train tomorrow’s healthcare leaders–ultimately resulting in greater positive change in the US and across the world.
