Hello guys,

It's 26th Nov but I haven't decide the school yet, so I really need some helps.
Here's my profile
Vietnamese male, 23 years old
Education: Biotech, pharmaceuticals and agriculture (3 years program at French-Vietnamese university). The program is equivalent to a normal 4 years program.
GMAT: 710 (50Q-34V), one cancelled. Not planing on retake, but will if fail the application this year.
GPA: 13/20 (Bologna scale) (not sure when converted to 4.0 scale, maybe 3/0/4.0, I'm asking for a transcript from the university)

Working exp: 2 years (3 years by the enrollment time):
Bulk Quality Control Junior at a Vaccine manufacturing company (6 months).
Senior Technical Support department at a Medical devices company (14 months).
Currently working on a Tech start up (I am the co-founder) in developing novel culturing reactor for various algae species (start immediately after leaving the previous job).
Currently (part-time) working with another small business group (design and marketing services) as an adviser (human resource and sale).

Career goal: Working in healthcare sector, mainly distributing pharmaceutic related products (medicine, supplements, medical devices or other biotech related product). Immediate goal is to work in a small to medium size company in the US for 3-4 years so that I can learn how to run a small healthcare business, and then come back to my country and start a business on my own (I got plan for this). Long time goal is to expand my current business in manufacturing algae and to run a new business (as mentioned) in Vietnam.

Schools on the list: Mays , Smeal, Naveen, Hamsler, Simon, Warrington (UF).
Target: 50% scholarship to full tuition waiver. (A primary objective in choosing school)

I acknowledge that I got relatively weak profile (normal working experience and low GPA), but I do want to complete my MBA as soon as possible due to several personal reasons. I really need evaluation on my profile and my chance of getting the targeted scholarship in targeted schools. I don't really mind about the ranking of the schools (But they should be at least ranked and not too inferior). Any recommendation on applying other schools that offer generous scholarship is really helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Hi AlfredNguyen,

Thank you for you for your post and for sharing your profile. Although your GPA is not strong and you have limited work experience, I think you have a compelling profile. I do recommend you address your GPA in your applications, and since you are seeking scholarships, do apply to a number of schools (5-6). Your application should really stress the reasons for an MBA and why you require it now. Also, you want to stress your leadership experience.

I am happy to continue the conversation. If interested, please click hereto coordinate a call.

Good luck!

Thank you for your reply.

It will be wonderful if you can evaluate my chance of getting scholarship with these schools and how much: Mays , Smeal, Naveen, Hamsler, Simon, Warrington (UF), Neely and COX. I may choose 4-5 schools out of these to focus on. Is there anything I can do to increase my chance of getting scholarship, like certificate in community service, job training (from international organisation) or being the leader of a local basketball team. Any other school suggestion would be great.

I choose these schools due to their incoming class profiles, average GMAT mostly, so I can have a little competitiveness to get scholarship. The average GMAT of these normally range from 640-670. Is that a correct strategy? I also consider Owen since the school seems to be generous, and I love Nashville also, but it seems to be out of my league.

The reason I want to do an MBA is that I need business skills, experiences from classmates, anything that might help me in creating a company after graduation. Doing MBA in the US, I have a chance to be exposed to many other industries, and a chance to work in real international environment, also I need time to carefully plan the business. I want to do it now because I already have a small business in manufacturing algae. The project is still in R&D stage but we gonna market the product soon, by the end of 2019, so I need to take over the business when it grows, maybe in the next 4-5 years (I own a majority equity of the company). I still manage the company strategy even when living in the US but most of the work will be taken care by another co-founder. In fact, we met a lot of struggles with the project but we survived.

My university doesn't rank the student after graduation but I was probably in top 20% despite of low GPA, as most of other students get the same GPA as I do. The professors are hard on giving us decent scores. Also, I studied in a international university, everything is taught in English, professors are from various countries (Taiwan, Korea, France, Australia...). Should I mentioned these when explaining my low GPA?

Hi AlfredNguyen,

There are two types of scholarships: need-based and merit-based. Each university has their scholarship structure in place (I recommend you review the university's financial aid website). The need-based scholarship is self-evident. The structure of merit-based scholarship differ by institutions, but generally, they are based on GPA and GMAT/GRE (academics). To increase your chances of receiving a merit-based scholarship, will require strong academics. Since you have a lower than the schools' average GPA, it is important to increase your GMAT score if you can.

You can read this article to help you narrow down the list of programs to apply to.

As to explaining your low GPA, I do not recommend including your classmates' grades in the description of the events. Instead, discuss your struggles.

Good luck!
