Is it okay to get a recommendation letter from a revised supervisor? He is 76 years old and no longer with the company - He is not active on linkedin. I am just wondering how authentic it would be
Hi
Nextstop, Thanks for reaching out to us at StratusPrep! I've been working to be more active as a resource and just now seeing your question- but since you are applying in the future this advice will hopefully still be relevant. First, I wouldn't worry too much about the LinkedIn profile of your recommender. Doubtful that anyone will have the time to look that deeply into it. When you are reading a stack of app, as long as the rec letter in the file itself is solid- I don't think the reader would be taking the time to look up the recommender on LinkedIn- at least I know I would not have taken that time unless there was something about the rec letter itself that made me question something with a need to look deeper. I would not use this recommender as a substitute for using a current supervisor- but if this prior supervisor worked with you on a key project that you'd like to highlight or he is able to reinforce your key themes with detailed examples of your work then he could be a good choice. On the plus side- he may have the extra time to really write a thoughtful letter of support. As long as he can speak to your work delivery and he was in a supervisory role, I would not let his age or his LinkedIn status or non-status be the driving issue.
As you are preparing for upcoming applications, these are the kinds of supportive guidance a firm like
Stratus Prep can provide.
