I am recruiting for my internship right now and learned some lessons from the past few months. Here is what I would recommend for those planning to recruit next year:
- Don´t exclusively focus on the biggest names (MBB / Goldman/JPM / Google/FB) in the respective industry you´re looking at
- If you have classmates that worked at any of the firms you are interested in, don´t be too vain to use their support and endorsements & contacts during the application process
- Always keep in mind that firms are trying to get an applicant pool that is as large as possible so that they have a better sample to select candidates for interviews - they aren´t as interested in your background as it might seem during early recruiting events
- Getting an interview/a job at "T2" firms is often not any less competitive and should be approached with the same level of rigor that you would show during an application with your dream company
Also, don't assume you have an offer. Only after you get it in writing can you stop recruiting. However, never assume you got it or reject another opportunity, unless you have accepted.
Great points Arro44. One more thing to add here from my experiece. MBA is a pretty front loaded program in terms of recruiting. Make sure you put in your best foot forward in those initital few months and not slack.
Been guilty of the last point. I had an extended internship with a firm and was told by my manager that I will get an offer. The discussion even included my goals for the next year, the products I will work on and the team mates too. But they were all words. I was naive to not recruit after the conversation and this was a great offer. The role, industry, location everything was perfect.
Don't need to tell everyone that I did not get the offer at the end and had to scramble through towards the tail end of the program. But it taught me a great lesson.
