Hi everybody, I am looking to apply for fall 2021 intake. Can you please have a glance and give me some feedback. Thanks !!!
Age: 28 when matriculating
Indian, Male
Academics
An engineering degree from a 2nd tier college. Below-average performance (Gone through severe depression almost my entire college life). Gave two exams post-graduation and scored maximum grades.
GMAT: Target 750+
Work Experience
Total tech experience of 2.5 years. Experience in the family business of 2 years. Total of 4.5
Chronology
1. Software Engineer at IT Services firm
1.a) Recognized achiever among-st the new recruits.
1.b) Completed a deliverable well before the deadline and got appreciation from the client for the quality of the work.
1.c) Helped the company make its first campus recruitment from Alma mater which led to 3 successful job offers.
2. Data Scientist at IT Services firm (same as above)
2.a) the First employee in the company to transition from software development to data science; My work exposed the company to a new market opportunity (data science).
2.b) Helped new team members transition from software development into data science.
2.c) Worked on a variety of projects, most of them were experimental and not traditionally given to young engineers.
3. Proprietor at the family business (chemical manufacturing)
3.a) Overtook senior-most position of a struggling business left vacant by my late father. Total workforce strength of around 30.
3.b) Managed to increase sales up to 24% from the previous year.
3.c) Handled client and vendor negotiations, oversaw product research and development, and responsible for due diligence on legal compliance.
3.d) Now in the process of shutting down and liquidating assets.
Extra-curricular
1. Done high-altitude trekking at altitudes of 14000 feet and up. Survived a blizzard.
2. Involved in cultural events during my time in corporate.
3. Stock trading. Digital electronics.
Post MBA Goal
Short-term: Deciding between product management in tech or consultant(tech/management). Currently researching on this.
Long-term: launch a tech startup, develop network in the startup scene, exit the company, and become a VC.

- The academic arc is weak per your own admission. The GMAT will help. It will be good to understand what courses you refer to after graduation. Also, how bad were the grades/any fail grades? The optional essay will be critical to bring out things well.
- The professional profile is eclectic although not unheard of. See here and here for some shades of similarities. The family business experience is usually a bit of double edged sword in that the quality is great but the brand is lacking. So, make sure to articulate this well.
- For reasons mentioned here, we don't speculate on school selection and chances. That being said, the post-MBA pitch needs to be thought through and developed further. Either of those paths might not be the most ideal. For instance, your tech experience was 2 or so years back, so pitching for tech PM might be tough unless there is something you've done in the intervening time. Do come up with a strong pitch here.
- The ECs arc looks to be on the basic hygiene level. Once again, think of how you may be able to bring that out better, with some quantification if possible.

Your profile is interesting. Sharing a few thoughts that may help you shape up your MBA application process for success.
1. Its key to understand that the MBA admits to leading B-schools are on the basis of holistic application presented, and not just on the basis of GMAT score. Strong academic record with a high GMAT score will get you additional points in the application but won't make or break. Given that you don't have a brand or grade to show from your undergraduate, you can focus on other aspects. Have you led any initiatives at your institute or otherwise that shows skills such as leadership, enthusiasm, etc. Do work on a high GMAT score to complement your application but also find out 'Spikes' in your career.
Lot of youngsters go through depression - something that is a function of the circumstances. If you can explain the circumstances and show how you bounced back, it can make you win.
2. Your experience is generic, and you are at a natural disadvantage considering you are coming from the largest pool of applicants to leading B-schools. However, the good aspect is that you will be employable post MBA, something that B-schools prefer. Post CoViD, internet based economy would grow and you can be a good fit given your background.
I would suggest to scout for key achievements, and prepare your resume / application in STAR format. You need to showcase not what you were responsible for but what you achieved given the situation you were in.
3. In extra-curriculars you need to showcase what impact you achieved. Trekking to 14000 ft is a great feat, but what did you achieve out of it? Did you make a difference to someone or did this experience enrich you in some manner?
You can always add up extra curriculars while you are preparing for GMAT or getting your application ready. Keep looking for avenues that interest you, fit in with your long-term aspirations, and strive to make a difference. Its all that matters.
