Age: 28 when matriculating
Indian, Male

Academics

An engineering degree from a 2nd tier college. Below-average performance (Gone through severe depression almost my entire college life). Gave two exams post-graduation and scored maximum grades.

GMAT: Target 750+

Work Experience

Total tech experience of 2.5 years. Experience in the family business of 2 years. Total of 4.5

Chronology

1. Software Engineer at IT Services firm
1.a) Recognized achiever among-st the new recruits.
1.b) Completed a deliverable well before the deadline and got appreciation from the client for the quality of the work.
1.c) Helped the company make its first campus recruitment from Alma mater which led to 3 successful job offers.

2. Data Scientist at IT Services firm (same as above)
2.a) the First employee in the company to transition from software development to data science; My work exposed the company to a new market opportunity (data science).
2.b) Helped new team members transition from software development into data science.
2.c) Worked on a variety of projects, most of them were experimental and not traditionally given to young engineers.

3. Proprietor at the family business (chemical manufacturing)
3.a) Overtook senior-most position of a struggling business left vacant by my late father. Total workforce strength of around 30.
3.b) Managed to increase sales up to 24% from the previous year.
3.c) Handled client and vendor negotiations, oversaw product research and development, and responsible for due diligence on legal compliance.
3.d) Now in the process of shutting down and liquidating assets.

Extra-curricular
1. Done high-altitude trekking at altitudes of 14000 feet and up. Survived a blizzard.
2. Involved in cultural events during my time in corporate.
3. Stock trading. Digital electronics.


Post MBA Goal
Short-term: Deciding between product management in tech or consultant(tech/management). Currently researching on this.
Long-term: launch a tech startup, develop network in the startup scene, exit the company, and become a VC.

Target schools
Kellogg, Rotman, INSEAD, LBS, Haas, Fuqua

Hey funkyakki,

Thanks for posting! I'll keep it short here and try and provide some guidance.

As you probably know, and from your list of schools, you'll need to score extremely well on the GMAT. You'll be competing against folks who graduated with high marks from places like IIT and who had a brand-name work experience on their resumes. I'd really shoot for a 750+ here, perhaps not needed for Rotman but the others most certainly.

I think it will be critical to emphasize the impact you had on the family business and how you came in following an unexpected event to drive growth. Is there a reason it is liquidating now? Is this Covid related?

I'd expand my list of schools here to include some Tier-2 US that place very well in tech and PM, such as McCombs, Foster, and Tepper. These are all great choices that won't necessarily require a 98th percentile GMAT. I think with a well thought out application and story, you can have a successful process.
