Are you doing enough to avoid jargon in your resume? Every company has its own “speak” – a language all its own that no one else really knows about, including adcoms! Not only does it make your resume incredibly arduous to read, it is also difficult to understand and can muddy what you are trying to say. But, time and time again, we see applicants throw words into their resume no one outside their industry or company could possibly be expected to know. So what is a good way to figure out if you’re falling into the “Jargon Trap”?
Read it out loud! Yup – it’s that simple. The way your mind processes language is different when you read silently and when you read out loud. Giving yourself an audible experience to react to can be a great way to put yourself in the reader’s shoes. Imagine you’re reading your resume to an admissions director in an interview as a response to a question they just asked. For some reason, people feel the need to complicate written material! If you have to struggle over complex sentences or wade through “corporate speak” then that’s a pretty good indication to simplify your essay.
When you have your resume drafted, remember – an experienced 2nd perspective can go a long way! At Critical Square, Our Resume Editing service marries your story, messaging, and accomplishments into a narrative that’ll leave the adcom wanting more! Learn more
