Hello,
I appreciate any input you can provide for my situation since I've received some conflicting information thus far. I think that I'm right in the middle of a gray area with my current situation. I scored a 710 on the GMAT a couple of weeks ago, but my split is 75% in Quant, 92% in Verbal, or 46 and 41, respectively. Although my current work experience is highly quantitative (marketing analytics involving advanced statistical modeling), my undergrad transcript shows 4 C+s in my quant courses and my overall GPA is 3.21 (the grades that are picking up my GPA focus more on softer skill courses). I will fortunately have recommendations that will vouch for my practical quant skills.
I've already signed up to retake the GMAT in 6 weeks in the hope of boosting my quant score significantly, but I'm having some doubts. My main concern is whether an equal or lesser score (section level, or overall) would be perceived negatively by an admissions committee. I've also been told that I would be better served devoting my time to my essays than marginally improving my GMAT score, as better essays would have a greater value that a few additional points on the GMAT.
I'm only targeting top schools, which makes this that much more of a potential problem. My current wishlist: Stern, Sloan, Tuck, INSEAD, LBS, HEC Paris, and possibly Cambridge or Oxford. I'm also considering the Fletcher school's MIB program.
I appreciate any feedback you can provide.
Thanks in advance!
The 710 GMAT score is fine but the lower quant section is going to worry the programs. My guess is that (if your essays told great stories) you would probably end up waitlisted as they wait for you to boost the quant score. There is no downside to retaking the GMAT since the schools use the highest scores and some will even combine scores from different tests as they rate your candidacy (a higher quant this time around combined with the high verbal you earned last time). For these reasons, I do agree that it's best to spend a bit of time boosting the quant score.
