Greekmythology
I wasnt sure If I was going to apply for round 2 until taking my Gmat for the 1st time at the end of December. Ive started on my essays for Michigan and Cornell and luckily my recommenders will be able to get their reccomendations done before the deadline.
Lets say I write a fairly good essay but not great and I dont get into either school for this Round 2. Will I be penalized when I reapply? Are they going to look at my essay from this round when I apply in another round? Because if Im going to hurt my chances for next year then it might not be a good idea to apply this year.
When the admissions are looking at candidates do they put successful athletes into a different group when trying to form their incoming class?
Id like to use an MBA to transition from marketing to consulting. If I put down consulting though will it be harder to get into that school than if I were to put down a safer job?
Is the deadline for the applications strict? My transcript might be a day or two late. Will the application on their website not let me turn in the app if its past the day of their deadline?
Thanks so much.
Greekmythology,
You have a lot of the basic questions one day before deadline. Nevertheless, here goes my answer:
1. There is no penalty when you reapply, but yes, there is a re-applicant essay which asks you how your profile has changed (for the better, ofcourse) since you last applied. You will have to answer this question along with the rest of next year's application. You may have to make a concerted effort for the rest of the year to improve your profile on different fronts- it could be related to work (getting a promotion, international opportunity, a huge project with leadership responsibility etc), academics (retaking the GMAT or doing relevant courses if they help you answer a weakness) or extra curriculars (launching a business, volunteering/ community work etc.). Most b-schools are reapplicant friendly, but yes, they do like to see the positive changes.
2. Are you an athlete? That may just about to help you differentiate yourself - but you will need to pin point why being an athlete makes you a good fit for MBA - have you developed some specific personality traits? So, I don't think you get into a separate group and walk your way through admissions (as happens as the undergrad level in many colleges), you still have to make yourself relevant to a b-school.
3. Any b-school will look for logic in your career path - they don't expect "safe options" but at the same time you should be able to make a clear reason for why you want to move from marketing to consulting, and why will you be good at it.
4. Yes the deadlines are strict. If you are feeling unprepared, just drop the MBA plans this year and submit your best application in Oct. I have never seen a hastily put application yielding good results.
