Hello Admission Consultant Community,
I was hoping to get some feedback on my profile and get a couple of questions answered.
Thanks for taking the time!
Overview:
White Male from the United States with a 3 GPA and 710 GMAT from a lower ranked top 10 university in 2013.
Double majored in Civil Engineering and Economics and then upon graduation pursued a career in Tech Sales at a well known fortune 100 Software company.
Have worked at the same company for the past 4 years.
Over the past 4 years have been in a closing role selling SAAS based software solutions to well known enterprise clients.
Managed a decent book of business and got 1 promotion after 3 years.
Points of Concern:
Not a lot of b school applicants seem to come from a b2b sales background, wondering how to position to a committee.
I would not say that sales is a bad background for B school- in fact it is great if you wanted to do product management after.Sales Careers often do not have the normal progression path and delineation found in other career plans.
What is great about sales is that you have clear results and that plays well in the the MBA application process- I would not be concerned at all about b2b sales- I think it is a very strong background and helps an engineer stand out by having business experience already. The title matters less than the deals that are brought in, i.e a seasoned professional and a college new hire are just categorized as sales reps in the industry.
Low GPA- Combination of being an engineer / not planning on doing grad school while being an undergrad
GMAT- Figure with the low GPA, I need a fairly stellar GMAT and I am planning on retaking
good idea to retake the GMAT- and a 3 in engineering is really not that bad- this is a hard major and adcom knows this. But certainly a great GMAT can help make that GPA go down a little smoother... and the other thing I would do if I was going for R1 next year is to really do my research on programs now in the spring- and get a good start- if you want to work with a consultant I would start in May this spring to really hit the ground running and be able to apply in R1 for all my programs. Having just lived through Crazy week- the week where almost every school has an app due- I can assure you the odds are better if you had your act together and got it done for R1.
