Hi guys,
I know it may be premature, but I prefer to have a clear understanding of the process of scheduling your potential MBA interviews (location and exact interview slot).
I'm a soon to be 29 year old white caucasian applicant from Eastern Europe who is looking forward to working on an approx. 7-school application package in the next few month. After (hopefully) improving my GMAT in the next few weeks, I want to spent the months until September to work on all applications (M7 plus safe schools).
My plan is to be ready by September and submit all of the applications in R1, but here comes the problem. I have a consulting internship offer from Oliver Wyman in Germany and have to decide on the time to do it now. They prefer me to have it between September and December. As they also asked me to not take any vacation in these months, it would be very difficult for me to schedule potential MBA interviews (even more so campus located interviews). If this will clearly harm my chances of admission, I would try to push the internship for the months when the interviews will have passed.
That's why I wanted to know how this whole interview scheduling process works, namely:
1. How much time does an applicant normally have to go for the interview? Is it arranged on short-notice or with some 3-4 weeks to go?
2. In which weeks do b-schools roughly have their interviews? What's the general time-frame?
3. Does the applicant normally pick a time/location or does s/he have only 2-3 options to choose from? Same for the location - besides campus interviews, can the candidate pick the location or is everything standardized?
4. Originally, I always wanted to go for the option of a campus interview. Would you recommend this, especially if not having visited campuses beforehand?
5. In case there are local alumni in the city, is this interviewing option explored as well? Is it then up to you and your interviewer to find a slot?
6. Are weekend interviews generally also possible?

Hey there,
Loving the question - you're clearly thinking ahead and that's awesome. So, to your questions:
1) This varies by school, more often than not you have a few weeks. If you look at interview invite > notification dates, you'll notice a 4 - 6 week window. Some schools, however, don't have set interview invite dates. So, for example, let's say you're applying to Haas. You could receive an invite early on in the round or a week before the final decision notification deadline. That isn't the norm, but some really good schools do that. Or, for example, Columbia, which is rolling.
2) Generally speaking, interviews occur between the 2nd week of October and late November / early December. Depends on when the application deadline for the school is
3) Once again, it depends. Some schools give you a lot of location options. Others, such as MIT, don't. They want you on campus if at all possible. Some use alumnus in cities around the world. Some don't. But, whatever the method, you get to pick the date / time based on availability. So if you get invited, log in immediately to lock down the time you want!
4) Absolutely go for on-campus if at all possible. It just sends a really strong, clear signal!
5) Yup, and yup.
6) Depends on if you're interviewing with alumnus or on campus, etc. If you're interviewing on campus, you could do weekends if you're doing a "super weekend". But if you're doing just a normal interview session with admissions directors, then that'll be during the weekdays. If it's with an alumnus, then it depends on your schedules. They may not prefer weekends.

Thanks a lot for your answer! It addresses all my questions.
As I had expected, it really depends a lot for all the schools. But bottom line, it seems that the internship will be a major roadblock as I won't be as flexible as I would want to (especially for on-campus interviews). Additionally, we should all not forget that those interviews expect a certain preparation and the long hours in consulting might be a problem. Though I expect almost all top 15 schools will have alumni in Germany, I would still prefer to try to meet the AdCom directly. Though it's a risky job, my generally energetic and friendly might help there (I hope).
As Oct 15th to Dec 10th is a pretty long window, I would rather prefer postponing the internship for Q1 2016 (pre-MBA). The schools on my list so far are H/S/W, Booth, Kellogg, MIT, Haas, Columbia, Tuck, and especially Columbia and Tuck with their early decision rounds might kick-off interviews earlier. The good thing again is that Tuck offer a self-initiated interview, something I might make use of
