C, D both are out because the Pronoun "They" is ambiguous. It could refer to the scientists or the mammals.

A- "in addition to how" sounds gibberish. The latter part is very wordy.

B- "In the determination of" is incorrect . Also the latter part of the sentence is in the Passive form.

E- Correct usage of "for determining" idiom.

A and B are unidiomatic for the use of of determining and in the determination respectively
In C they are ambiguous
D is in passive voice.

E correctly uses for determining and there is no ambiguity

E is correct

IMO is C.
I don't think that "for determining" is a good idiom.

What is the source?

C & D are incomplete sentences
B - is passive
E is the best way of combining the questions on how and when
