Hi Everybody,

I gave GMAT today and scored 760(Q49, V45, IR5).
I know it's a decent score but I am particularly concerned regarding the Quant and IR percentile, 77 and 54, respectlvely.

Does a Quant percentile below 80 significantly hurt my chances of getting into a good school?
How important is the IR score?

Should retake it, aiming for Q >= 50 and IR>=7?

Background:
Indian. 25. Software Engineer.
4 years out of IIT. Low GPA: 6.9/10.
No community work.

Probable Target Schools:
ISB
INSEAD
London Business School
Oxford University’s Saïd Business School
HKUST

Basically, schools offering 12-15 month courses.

Any help would be really appreciated.

P.S: This was my first attempt.

I definitely would not worry about this. It really would make a lot more sense for you to focus on other aspects of your profile. If you try to compete on the basis of the GMAT, you're just never going to win as an Indian software engineer. It's really important for you to come up with ways to diversify yourself, develop a sense of personality in your essays, application. Kind of have a lot to overcome not having any community service. for the love of all that is holy, my friend do NOT even consider retaking that GMAT. That would be nuts.

Instead:
1. celebrate
2. spend all your energies on making awesome essays.

Your schools list is pretty reasonable, as long as you make the most of your profile.

Best,
Jon

Absolutely not, you have a great score particularly for the schools you are targeting. Now get moving on the rest of the application!

Congrats on your score!! No need to take it again. Quant is good enough for these schools and the IR is not currently being used so do not pay attention to that.

I don't think you need any more people singing in this choir but yes- get on with your applications! I think sometimes we cling to what comes easily- which for you is the GMAT clearly (and congrats!) but I have found that sometimes this means the writing is actually the harder part and you may be subconsciously avoiding the part you won't enjoy as much... so absolutely get to work on the applications and make sure that you have a package that matches your score. The score itself is not a slam dunk.. although it is a great score-- but if you don't have good interviews and essays it won't be a done deal. Best of luck on that and for the application part that's where all of us consultants can help should you want that.... you know we are all just an email away!

You should now move onto the application and make sure you tell a strong story given your weak extra-curricular activities. Send me an email if you want to talk about your application strategy.

Scott,

Really appreciate your sharing thoughts on this -- definitely helped me to calm down.
Would email you soon, regarding the application.

Regards,
Sahil

Thanks a lot everyone for pitching in.
I’ve decided to focus on the applications and to not give GMAT again — phew!!

StratusMBACounselor, you’re absolutely right; I indeed had been shying away from the writing part.

Would definitely would email you soon.
