Hi kbali,

You posted this in another Forum on this site, so I've pasted over my response from there:

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you're looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) How long did you study before your second attempt at the GMAT?
2) What materials did you use?
3) How have you scored on each of your recent CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)?

4) What is your goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School?

1. I studied for about 2.5 months prior to the 2nd take.
2. Subscribed to magoosh, went through their math videos, verbal videos and did a lot of practice problems, watching explanation videos when wrong. When through the Manhattan guides the first attempt, so reviewed my notes from those and practice to CATS; Towards test time, found out about Target Test Prep for Quant, and focused on that the remaining 5-8 days.
3/28/15 GMAT attempt 1 690 Q40 V 44

4/2/16 Magoosh 510 Q 27 V 34
4/9 GMAT Prep 620 Q40 V35
4/10 Magoosh 600 Q36 V37
4/23 MGMAT 650 Q43 V 36
4/24 Magoosh 560 Q36 V 31
5/1 Veritas 620 Q40 V35
5/7 MGMAT 2 600 Q 37 V 35
5/8 Magoosh 600 Q 36 V 37
5/13 GMAT Prep 2 700 Q 44 V 41

5/21 GMAT 2nd attempt: 670 Q 46 V 36

Goal score is anything 720+; shooting for a 750.

Hi kbali,

First off, a 670/Q46 is a strong score (it's right above the 80th percentile overall), so it could be enough to get you into your first-choice School. As such, a retest might not be necessary. Depending on the Schools that you plan to apply to, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile. There's a Forum full of them here:

1) The CAT result on 5/13 was an 'outlier' relative to your other CAT scores. Since you had taken the GMAT previously, had you taken that CAT before?
2) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

I reset the GMATPrep software before taking the 5/13 CAT and do not recall seeing many/any duplicates...could it not mean that stuff was finally clicking/coming together for me?! haha

2. Round 1, Duke, UNC, Emory, Austin will my current scores put me in the running? (with a 3.1 Duke undergrad)?

Hi kbali,

Since you know which Schools you want to apply to, going over all of those details with an Admissions Expert would make sense. I can tell you that a 670 puts you 'in the range' of what each of those Schools considers an acceptable GMAT score.

As far as retaking a CAT that you've already used, each 'pool' of questions associated with a CAT is limited. Seeing just a few 'repeat' questions can throw off the accuracy of the score result (even if you don't remember the correct answer, you still remember the question, so you're not facing it for the 1st time). Given how much higher that result was relative to your other CATs, there's some question as to how accurate it was.
