and indicates that parallelism is needed. We need something parallel to " a proponent of social reforms", the only possible answer is E.

POE:
When you see 'and' before underline, search for parallelism.
We need something which should be parallel with the proponent of social reforms.
Only (E) seems parallel to it. Eliminate others.

Also, another way.

'Being' is redundant in GMAT. Eliminate (B) & (D).
'Opposing is the wrong form of the verb used. Eliminate (A).
Down to two (C) & (E). (E) is more clear and simple. Plus, 'opposition' should not be preferred.

A) vocally opposing railroad trusts

B) vocally being opposed to railroad trusts

C) his vocal opposition to railroad trusts

D) being a vocal foe of railroad trusts

E) a vocal foe of railroad trusts - CORRECT

Correct Answer - E
Explanation - It involves parallelism, and the elimination process cuts it down to 2 C & E. E make the complete sentence more parallel in structure.

I know we should take time before marking the answer but I am guilty of solving this in 14 seconds.

Senator Robert LaFollette of Wisconsin, who in 1924 ran for President of the United States as the nominee of his own Progressive Party, is best remembered as a proponent of social reforms and vocally opposing railroad trusts.

We get

Senator Robert LaFollette of Wisconsin is best remembered as a proponent of social reforms and vocally opposing railroad trusts.

Now we see that Senator was remembered as a proponent and "some other noun". Only nouns can be parallel.

A) vocally opposing railroad trusts

B) vocally being opposed to railroad trusts

C) his vocal opposition to railroad trusts

D) being a vocal foe of railroad trusts

E) a vocal foe of railroad trusts
