Hi!

I’ve been working for about 5 years. The first four were in marketing (with a focus on ops and analytics) and the last 1 has been in business intelligence.

I’m strongly considering an MBA in the next 2-3 years as I believe the network and general boost it could provide will be key for the rest of my career. I’m not looking to pivot, I’m interested in a career in analytics/operations. I'm hoping to use an MBA to give my career an upward boost and make new connections.

My question is I might have the chance to become a manager in the next two years and I’m wondering if it makes sense to wait to go back to school until after I have some management experience. My thought process is if I have management experience before MBA it will be easier to get a management job after. Does this make sense or seem like what other people have experienced?

B-Schools will see your experince leadership potentiality. So need not to bother about the managerial experience. It is very difficult to get a managerial role within a 5 year period, unless until if you have fancy graduate brands like IIT/IIMs.

While management experience is a nice to have before bschool, it is by no means required (well over half enter without it). If you can offer clear and compelling reasons for why MBA in your applications (aside from the boost and connections, such as hard and soft skills you want to gain from the degree and how they'll help you achieve your short and long-term goals) I would apply now. If you wait until you're a manager, with 7+ years of work experience you'd need to explain more why now is the right time for an MBA.

The other option is applying to a part-time program if you see yourself at your current company for the next few years and feel that they would support this endeavor.

Hope this helps a little! Best of luck :-)
